"This book includes some of Thomas Paine's best writing. It is also one of his most controversial works, as it pitted him against the prevailing religious sentiments of the day. It is an important axe at the root of the notion that the Founding Fathers sought to make a Christian nation. (Nope, they didn't.) It is also an important work in understanding Deism, a religious belief that enabled many to be highly intellectual and retain a traditional notion of God.
I really enjoyed this book, as it spelled out much of what I was already feeling. However, I didn't feel all of Paine's argument for the existence of God held up to serious scrutiny."
"I love Paine and the way he writes. I was drawn to him in an attempt to escape the endless political mess of the '08 elections and find that the calm, dry tone of 18th-centure discourse is very soothing. Of course, this is not politics, but religion, and here also, Paine writes with the same logical, detached tone, though the points he raises are blistering. This was a lovely read."
