"I think this was Longden's first book - its based on a time in his life when his first wife fell ill with a condition that the doctors couldn't understand (this was in the 80s - its now thought to be a form of ME). Her condition quite rapidly went downhill, and she eventually passed away.
But before you wonder why I would ever recommend a book covering something so sad....the main thing to note about this book is that the author has an amazing way of writing in a very entertaining way about mundane everyday activities and capturing the joy present in every day life. This means that the book is hardly ever sad to read - its really quite something!
Of course, it also makes you think about your own relationships with family and friends, and how you should cherish what you have - but it in no way shoves that down your throat, it just might make you want to be thankful :)"
