"Bond actually seems to fall in love in this one, and almost loses Tiffany, but manages to save her. From Africa to New york to california back to Africa..Torture, a train chase, gun play, violence, high adventure. Felix is back, but bunged up and if I tell anymore it might be a spoiler...they might be called "fun" books if not for all the killing, but then that's what a 00 is you know, a license to kill."
"Over the summer I re-read all of the Ian Fleming James Bond books in order of their publication date(don't read any of the junk by others who followed Fleming after he died). Mostly I re-read the books because the re-issue paper-backs had such cool covers. The books are a one day read and absolutely a hoot."
"Though I'm only three into the series, this is my least favorite so far. The female character is not as complex as the others and Bond becomes a kind of "sexual" savior. The climax of the story was also a bit too abrupt and unsatisfying. The resolution did make up that a bit. As always, though, far more engaging and interesting than the movie."
"I wasn't exactly looking forward to this one but I was pleasantly surprised at the simple and ingenious writing here. Bond is simply smuggling diamonds into America to work his way up through a mob pipeline. That's it. The way in which the mob pays him for his services is where the ingenious part comes in. Reading these books now, I'm surprised at what interesting women Fleming writes despite the fact Bond is a famous sexist. But Fleming still felt the need to have Bond read a 3-4 page article about the history of Saratoga Springs. This is the kind of stuff that stalls these books and makes them beg for their life. Still, I liked this one better than both Live And Let Die and Moonraker. It's cool when Bond is a detective and not trying to keep the world from ending."
