"While I was reading this book Mr. Roth passed away, having lost a battle to lung cancer. It may sound silly, but learning this actually made me cry (something I don't do a lot). That's because authors like Hal Roth are a vanishing breed. They're being eclipsed by people with expertise in a narrower area who always seem to be looking over their shoulder to make sure their sponsers or advertisers, or even their readers, won't be offended by what they"re writing. There are many things I liked about this book. There is some excellent technical information. It is written beautifully and the illustrations are clear. But most of all I liked what we call in these parts the "Dutch Uncle" talk. This is usually dispensed by someone who is close enough to you to see that you're about to mess up. They care about you and maybe already went through what you're about to do. So they take you aside and carefully explain what's going on. A little bit like "tough love" but not so tough. So Hal Roth is my new favorite author. The good part is there are lots of used copies out there. The bad part is I can't go visit him and his wife over on the wonderful Eastern Shore of Maryland."
