Description: This is a new paperback version of a text, originally published in 1969, that outlined the principles of urban design from an environmental perspective. It should benefit architects, urban and regional planners, and environmentalists. read more
"I am a philistine (engineer). I deeply appreciate the ecological approach proposed in this book, however. I think it's a shame that the great majority of engineers, planners, economists, architects etc. have become so totally consumed by their single point of view that we disregard the importance of the perspective provided by other disciplines. I think my only real complaint about this book would be the way that McHarg dismisses the importance of the non-ecological point of view. In my opinion we will never really arrive at planning solutions that work globally (not as in for the whole earth, but taking all considerations into account) until we learn to synthesize all of the fields simultaneously."
"Excellent book for anyone interested in or studying architecture, planning, environmental design, or even sociology, geography or cartography. There is a study of social diseases in Philadelphia that are mapped toward the back of the book that correlate the rate of disease with increase in population density. This book makes you think."
