"This book is certainly less discussed than Darwin's most famous work, but I think that its value is often overlooked. It offers us not so greatly an accurate view of the evolution of Homo sapiens, but rather an interesting chance to analyse the perspectives and teachings of the day, and what they can teach us about how much we think we know about palæoanthropology. I find this fascinating: the nature of historical fact and our perspective on the way in which it is interpreted. Many of the things that Darwin says would be to-day read as racist, but to-day, in our (more) equal treatment of race, we avoid calling the bushmen lower men or savages. I personally don't see either term as correct. Surely I believe that race is superficial, but racist or non-racist opinions have profound effects upon the perception of reality, history, and social sciences. Read it."
