Earth Custodians Call to Courage and Action

by Yvonne D on Sep 30, 2013

This beautiful, sad yet hopeful book intended to raise our environmental awareness and call us to positive action, goes far beyond the brief allusion to Jonas and the whale in the bible or to the young girl atop the whale in Whale Rider, a leadership novel about Maori myth and culture in New Zealand. Four Arrows take the reader to new heights, reaching into the depths of courage and spirit and awakening us to realities we need to acknowledge and face if we to are improve the quality of life for all within the Web of LIfe on this planet. I highly recommend this fiction novel for middle-school pre-teens class-based novel study and animated discussion. Together educators and students may explore the meaning of life, seeking positive purpose and "the bear" the courage within to reach for one's dreams. Helen Keller once said "Life is an exciting adventure or nothing at all." This fiction novel weaves wonderful threads of truth throughout the adventure storyline with bright colours of faith, courage, persistence and perseverance. In the end I ask myself about finding the courage to truly live and teach truly, I have questions about interspecies communication and wonderful how I can better contribute to active environmentalism. Why do whales eat so much toxic waste? Why do whales beach themselves? What is the message when a wild creature decides to stop to breathe? What happens to that sacred breath of life when we believe we have exhausted all options? What are our options? If you are teacher, read the book and get it on your school board's approved book-reading list. This is a must-read. S. E. Hinton's "The Outsiders" is not the only book our young people need to explore. Get them beyond the concrete jungle. Let them feel grass under their feet and, in and around their skin, ocean salt water ocean whose composition when it is healthy, is much like our tears. Yvonne G Dufault
