"I honestly cannot put into words what it is I love about Marquez - perhaps that's why I read books, rather than write them! But, for the sake of the review, I will have to try... His beautifully written prose, colourful descriptions and very distinct form of magic realism honestly do transport the reader to another world. When working through a GGM novel, I have to confess that I get so caught up in the pure joy of reading that I forget to think about the metaphors and the messages behind the words. Once the reading's done though - the book lingers on for days in my head...
'Of Love and Other Demons' is another excellent piece of fiction from the great Marquez. It's an extremely sad tale of love and obsession that is made all the more poignant by the author's introductory note, explaining that he was inspired by a real-life experience. In a relatively short novel, Marquez deals with many different subjects, including religious hysteria and the demonising of innocence and pure love by the corrupt Catholic church. The characters are all wonderfully well drawn and the tragic young heroine commands the readers' sympathy."
"I feel like there is nothing you can say about GGM that hasn't already been said or that if you are contemplating reading this book you don't already know. He is the king of Magical Realism and romantic metaphors comparing love to disease, demonic possession, etc. He is a master of lust, longing, and love. The drama is overblown but never feels that way. He is just so excellent at using all of the elements of his style to perfectly balance his stories by turning them into what seem to be epic myths or fairy tales of South America."
"I liked Marquez' style of writing but I hated how the story turned out and it turned out like another of his books My Melancholy Whores to have a huge theme of pedophilia. This disgusted me and I can't back any author that has a theme of pedophilia but calls it 'love' and doesn't present itself as being a bad thing.
I am going to give Marquez one last try with the 100 Years of Solitude book and if that has so much of a hint of pedophilia, I will officially hate him and wonder why he got so famous.
It's NOT love when the girl is 12 and the man is 36, FFS. I'm so angry now I've read more reviews."
"This book focuses at great length on the concept of magical realism; i.e., the idea that magic can be incorporated into everyday life in literature without acknowledgement or even surprise that it is there. However, the book did not do a good enough job making the material very satisfying to read. Although the details were all very interesting, the grueling and often gruesome tortures performed on Sierva Maria kind of turned me off as a reader. I also did not appreciate how none of the characters were likeable and sympathetic. I give Marquez credit for picking an unusual topic (rabid dogs bites) and tying it into the theme of magical realism and the dangers of love, but I did not find the book enjoyable to read."
