"This book is about a girl who has scoliosis. Her mothers dream was to be a model and now she would like her daughter to have the same dream. When they go to an agency they say that there is something wrong with Dennie's posture. Her mother blames it on her and keeps telling her to stand up straight. But when Deenie goes from nurse, to doctor, to surgeon, to a scoliosis specialist Deenie has had enough. Her mother though, has repetitively said that it was Deenie fault she laterally can't take it anymore.
I can make a text to world connection. My connection is that many people all over the world have problems with their backs. This is because they either don't sit up straight or they have it in there genes. Many people who have it would have to treat it with a brace or surgery. This is very similar to what Deenie has had to face with.
I would give this book 5 stars because I think that is a very good book. Judy Blume's books are based on real life situations. So many people could relate to them. Sine her stories are very true they are also very interesting."
"From my childhood, there were certain authors I consistently read because of how well they understood the younger person's point of view. Judy Blume happens to be one of those authors that young girls just have to read.
I picked up this book years ago, when I was a young teenager, for no other reason than it was written by Blume and I was in need of a good book. I read about Deenie's bought with scoliosis and, having never heard of the condition, did just what the heroine did and sat down with a few reference books to look it up. Knowing more about what Deenie had to go through really makes reading about her experience that more poignant. When she broke down and cut off all her hair, I could understand her frustration and really felt for her, though she is nothing more than a fictional character.
I think anyone could read this book and feel it's worth finishing."
"This was one of the first Judy Blume books I read as a child, and I laugh now at how I thought Deenie was so old and sophisticated next to how I felt... However, I read this book over and over, because Judy Blume captures how teenagers think and feel, the awkwardness, the shyness, the way we are around our friends, and around boys! She really got it, and this book has readers in a whole new place, somewhere that we didn't know about, a diagnoses of scoliosis. I learned a lot of different things that people go through by reading Judy Blume books. She was great that way. I think she sums up my youth really well!"
"as a survivor of adolescent scoliosis, i was grateful to find a book that addressed this condition. blume crafts her characters as real and relatable, but falls short in revealing the psychological impact of scoliosis on a young developing girl. in one passage of the book, deenie looks in the mirror and notes that she can't really see anything wrong with her body; this completely flies in the face of what almost any scoliosis survivor will tell you. scoliosis can be seen, felt, and sensed by most young girls afflicted with it -- -- so for blume to portray deenie as oblivious to her condition is incongruous with the reality of scoliosis.
