About this title: Van Gogh's brother Theo was his confidant and companion, and, in his letters to him, Van Gogh reveals himself as artist and man. Even more than if he had purposely intended to tell his life story, Van Gogh's letters lay bare his deepest feelings, as well as his everyday concerns and his views of the world of art.

"Illuminating and disturbing, Van Gogh's letters to his brother are pretty intense at times. I seem to remember thinking I could kind of see how his thinking went wrong. . .how you could follow it along its path, getting deeper into the same mental whirlpool. . .and then I thought: I don't want to see that lol. Great book, if disturbing/possibly depressing--but rewarding and recommended."
"Van Gogh is far more amazing than I would have known without this book. His reading habits are remarkably cultivated, and he grappled with all of the major issues of his time, and all time. His senseless suffering is almost unbelievable. Except then one is reminded of how the world "works," and it is all to clear that Van Gogh is among the many to have paid the price for it. And for what? My problem with this book is that it is not at all clear where the letters came from, how they were abridged, translated, prepared, etc. In fact, it's not even clear what language his letters were originally written in based on this book in hand. Most of the letters were to and from France, so one thinks French. But Van Gogh was Dutch. It seems he was probably at least tri-lingual: Dutch, English, French. It's too bad this silly mass-market edition thinks we don't want to know. So then, great content, but bad form. The book package is far from satisfactory in this case, and the pages are loaded with acid, so it's not going to hold up much longer."
