"I really liked this book. It was recommended to me by a friend of my mom's and at first I was skeptic. But after reading just a little bit of it I was hooked. The plot is very good, the characters well developed, and the addition of mystery just adds to how good it it. I've read the whole series, except the newest one, and have added them to my favorites. Sookie, the main character, is really down to earth, even with her gift and it lets us readers connect more with the story. This book is worth reading, along with the rest of the series."
"Dead Until Dark is a delightful romp, vampire romance and murder mystery rolled into one, with a little--just a little!--social commentary to hold it together. Sookie Stackhouse is a sassy small-town Southern girl with a disability; she's a telepath, and it takes all her powers of concentration not to be constantly overwhelmed by the thoughts of those around her. At the story's beginning she's working in a bar, living with her Grandmother, and resolutely remaining a virgin--too much mental noise involved with the prospect of sex.
Then she meets Bill, the vampire. Oh, Bill's not the only vampire; for two years, now, vampires have been out of the coffin ("as they laughingly put it") and living among humans. Bill Compton has returned to his hometown of Bon Temps, Louisiana and is living in his old family home and attempting to mainstream into human society. As things will, one leads to another, and Sookie and Bill become involved.
Charlaine Harris has created a charming, strong, self-aware heroine in Sookie Stackhouse. She also creates a strong sense of place in her depiction of Bon Temps and its environs"

"You know when you buy a pint of ice cream and you think it is a good idea because it is smaller than a big tub of ice cream but as soon as you start eating it, you can't stop and then before you know it you've eaten the entire thing. You feel sick and guilty but you know you will go back and do it again. That sums up my feelings for this book. I knew when a friend handed me the first three books that I should have said no. We had talked about Twilight, we had talked about being addicted despite the bad writing, yet I took these books and immediately started reading. I read about 5 pages and had to stop, flip to the copyright page and then wonder why no one is talking about the odd similarities between this book (published in 2001) and Twlight. The Sookie Stackhouse version just adds in some humor and more adult situations (read that this one you don't wait until the final book for a reference to sex; it appears fairly early on). This book isn't bad, it isn't fabulous, it is a perfect guilty, summer read. The vampire theme is mixed in with a mystery that while I was on the right track of solving there was still a few good twists. Everyone needs a good pint of ice cream now and then but just be sure you balance it out with something good for you."
