"This is a fairly typical murder whodunit. As such, it is a good read -- not great, but worthwhile.
What sets this book apart is the locale. All the action takes place in Venice Italy. The author makes continual references to the streets, canals, history of the city, and other parts of the lagoon. The book contains maps of the city and lagoon so the reader can follow the action.
Most of my knowledge of Venice comes from this read. Highly recommended if you want to know more about this fascinating Italian city."
"This was the first of the Aurelio Zen books I ever read and I did not particularly enjoy it, but after reading all the others, I returned to it and found myself once again admiring Dibdin's work. This is a darker book than many of the earlier ones in the series, but most of the later Zen novels seem to me to be darker than the earlier ones."
"I like mysteries, but usually I like Victorian mysteries. However, Michael Dibdin's Aurelio Zen series is well-written and I do like the armchair travel to Italy. I think DEAD LAGOON is an excellent "Aurelio Zen" book, but it's not the very best."
"Venice at its quietest and darkest, forms a backdrop to this gritty crime novel from a mater of the genre. Aurelio Zen remains an engaging focus although he is a somewhat flawed man."
