"Meet the original Homer Simpson. I loved the early LA setting -- brings back memories of climbing the hills of Boyle Heights in the '50s to visit an aging uncle living in a bleak SRO hotel where we sat on the edge of the bed and chatted (there was a porcelain convenience under there, I remember). This story is a little disturbing, but highly recommended. I also read a few of West's letters, especially to Scott Fitzgerald ... I see a lot of similarity."
"I love the movie also but these two compliment each other really well. It's a short story so the movie is able to really flesh it out and give it depth, the main difference is in the climax which is more visually chaoticic where in the book it is more psychological."
"The pathological, the vain, the deeply self-involved that West observed in Hollywood 70 years ago- they've gone from a handful of characters in an emerging industry to embedded archetypes in our national character.
"l.a. book, nat west skewers the shallowness and silliness of movie industry, and the superficialiticality of l.a. in general. how all l.a. is like a movie set. i forget the details but i think something depressing happens.
i love nathaniel west always because no matter how much i try to force myself to be good, think good thoughts and be more calm and intelligent, i always fall back on base humour and sarcastic exaggerations of everything i find ridiculous, which is everything. fitting the bill, nat west stories never fail to be sarcastic and funny."
