"Dante's Inferno needs no introduction, but I'm going to give it one anyway.
Presenting:
Dante's INFERNO
The story of a man who looses all hope, decides to end it all, but is saved by divine intervention and then sent on a trek to the underworld with everyone's favorite Roman poet: Virgil!
Ok, I didn't finish it. Why? Snooze!
It's true; for a book about a man who journeys to the very center of hell and sees all kinds of horrors, nothing really happens. There is description in spades and side characters enduring their eternal torment by the millions, but Dante is only an observer and therefore a passive character.
There is a moment where some demons direct Virgil and Dante off the designated path of safety, but I had a feeling they'd find their way back.
Ok, the main reason that I picked up this copy of Dante was because it was translated by 20 well-respected modern poets including, but not limited to, Galway Kinnell, Jorie Graham and Mark Strand. I thought that it would be interesting to see how many different perspectives in language one could get from Dante. I was disappointed because not one poet made the language of Dante come to life for me.
I believe that in modern times, the English Inferno faces several challenges. 1) There will always be a devaluation of language in translation, 2) the poem is now a classic and as such, translators cannot be too creative with the work, 3) the poem was written for people who would know of the sinners punished in hell - modern audiences need to read with footnotes, which take away from hellish pleasures, and 4)modern sensibilities bring new religious sensibilites - modern readers can recognize the parable-like qualities of Dante's work, but the true horror of hell has lost significance. It's horrifying to think that punishments like those found in Dante can be imagined, but I doubt Dante's modern readers would consider his work as a warning as to what awaits them after death.
There were certain parts I enjoyed, but I found it was difficult to remember the narrative and layers of hell. Usually, I'd read the canto, then flip back to the footnotes, which were more interesting to me, to decipher what I'd read.
Dante's vision was great, but I think that if he had written it today, it would be on a blog for a few personal friends who would get all the references and personalities that Dante put in hell to torment. Mainly, it'd be a great inside joke, but I doubt it'd gain much viewership on YouTube."
"A journey into purgatory. Will leave you wondering weather varying levels of Hell and Heaven exist and do the things we do in this world dictate were we will end up."
"I'm not into these kinds of books- but I had to read it for class. It was a hard read and I definitely depended on spark notes for it. But I suppose it was good for my book history."
