"The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby By Dav Pilkey Published by Scholastic 2002 Grades 3 to 6 Graphic Novel
The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby is a fun graphic novel that kids will enjoy reading. While some graphic novels have a wide audience of readers, Dav Pilkey specifically targets children with his humor, writing and illustration style. This does not mean adults cannot enjoy reading it as well, but I though specific parts speak directly to kids, perhaps the reluctant readers. The story begins with the birth of Billy Hoskins, soon to be Super Diaper Baby. Evil villain Deputy Danger and his dog launch an evil plot to get super powers, but in a twist of fate Billy gains the super powers. The evil doers continue to plot, resulting in Deputy Danger being transformed into poop. His dog eventually switches sides, comes to the rescue of Super Diaper Baby and they save the day. The style of the graphic novel makes it look like children have drawn the pictures and written the words. Done entirely without color, the illustrations are full of action and fun words to say, like "crack" and "zap." The panels are also arranged very logically and there is never confusion over which one to read next. I though this was very important for those newly introduced to the format of graphic novels. It was also interesting that in the text the words are spelled how they sound, "pitchers" and not pictures. This is fine for sounding out words to gain meaning but I wonder if it might prove detrimental in spelling class! The bathroom humor was something I can imagine many young boys enjoying and even I enjoyed a chuckle on one of the flip-o-rama pages, named as a good place to insert subliminal messages, "Question authority. Read banned books!" It is also of note that the flip book style pages are very interactive, a good way to engage the reader and provide a nice break from reading for beginning readers or those with short attention spans. Having never read one of the "Captain Underpants" graphic novels, I can now see why they have gained popularity amongst kids"
