About this title: DAISY MILLER is often thought of as the quintessential James novel: the story of the innocent abroad who is corrupted by contact with an older, more sophisticated society. Daisy, a delightfully uninhibited young American, scandalizes the European community in which she is a visitor with her high spirits and disregard of ancient conventions. After an innocent but unwise tryst with an Italian admirer to see the Colosseum in Rome by moonlight, Daisy contracts malaria and dies. The pathos of her death is compounded by the fact that another admirer, Winterbourne, is never entirely convinced that ...

"This is my first encounter with Henry James other than a few movies based on his books. I was totally enthralled by his writing and his marvelous portrait of this vivacious young woman. Daisy Miller is not a story in the true sense that it has a great plot line, it is more of a study, a portrait, a series of encounters with the narrator that gives us insight into not only Daisy's personality but also the expatriate society in Europe at the time and the flaws and foibles of the narrator. It is rife with the morals of the time and very fascinating.
I found it interesting that while the narrator of the tale is Frederick Winterbourne, the reading is done by Susan O'Malley. I wondered at first how well it would work having a woman tell a man's tale, after all wouldn't you want a man's voice, but amazingly enough she did a geat job and it was actually best to have a woman's voice for the many time Daisy spoke in the story.
"I liked this book yet i can't say that i was completly fond of it either. I have mixed feelings over the theme and characters of the book. It was a interesting story, and when i was at the book store and saw it was short it only made it better. It is very realistic to even todays world and socity. I heard from many people that they didn't like the end when she dies because it made the story depressing. I would have to disagree, if she didn't die the book wouldn't have much meaning to it. Also, you dont truly see Daisys real character until after she gets sick. This time is very brief, like the last 4 pages or so, but those 4 pages contain so much controversy to the rest of the book that it changes your mind on everything."
"I really enjoyed this book. Mostly I chose it at first because I knew it was fairly short and easy to understand in comparison to the other books on the list. However, I was suprised that the book was actaully pretty insightful and interesting. I can kind of relate to Daisy in a way because she's constantly criticized for spending time alone with unmarried men. It's sad that in society it's the woman that gets a bad reputation for things of that nature. Even in high school it happens. It's quite unfortuate. I feel kind of bad for Winterbourne, although I couldn't tell exactly how he felt about Daisy. I think he really liked her which is sad because she doesn't really treat him well. She brags about all her other man in front of him and doesn't reveal her true feelings for him until she's already gone."
"I enjoyed the main theme that James portrayed about social rules in different societies and conformity. What Daisy was doing in Europe might have been more acceptable in American society than in that of Europe. She refuses to conform which leads to her scandalous reputation. Daisy's American mother did nothing to restrain her daughter from her gentlemen's society. However, Mrs. Walker, a woman living in Rome, was so compassionate to try to help Daisy not ruin her reputation even more. Social etiquette differs in European and American society. Daisy did not care if she was being improper because having grown up in America, her innocence and ignorance leads her to believe that her actions are okay. However, she does not realize the social affects her actions will have on her. I thought this point James conveyed was interesting and made it different from other novels."
