"Messner writes in a very different style than the other climbing books that I have read. He doesn't just write about the act of climbing the events of an expedition. He is very introspective, almost philosophical. He writes about the inward effects of climbing and how it works on the psyche. He also has a deep concern for the local people and the political turmoil affecting the country. He is very insteresting to read but seems to have a very melancholy personality."
