About this title: Set during the Salem witchcraft trials, this play is most famous for its metaphor for McCarthyism--in fact, three years after the play was produced, Miller himself was called before HUAC. In the play, Miller used colonial language to near-poetic effect; the plot involves characters who have to make certain moral choices concerning their ...

The Crucible, a wonderful play that focuses on a specific time period in American History in Salem, Massachusetts. The play takes place during the mid-1900's where people in Salem believed in the beings so called "witches". During this time, any female would was thought to act strange would be accused as a witch, and trust me, when you read this book, you would hope that you didn't live during this time period. In this book, it talks about witchcraft, and affairs between someone's husband or wife between another person's husband and wife.
In this playbook, it focuses on mainly witchcraft, and how the people in Salem reacts to witchcraft. When a woman is thought guilty being a witch, they would stand trials until they are proven that one is a witch. In this playbook, John Proctor has an affair with Abigail when he is already married, and as they continue to meet, John's wife, Elizabeth starts to cause trouble such as...mentioning someone is a "witch". During this time, when someone says the word, witch, it really becomes a big reaction and a big deal to other people because witches were considered enormously dangerous because of their witchcraft
If you like to know more about American History and this time period where witches MAYBE existed, then go to the library or a book store and pick up this book and read. However, let me warn you, this book is written as a play, where there's 99% dialogue, and about 1% monologue. But if you read this book, and continue to read it, it grows very interesting and I guarantee you won't keep your eyes off the book for a second."
"A true masterpiece that will make you question the character of society and yourself. I was able to relate to many situations shown in this story and it changed my views on a lot of things by inspiring me to think in about them in a more abstract way. This story helped me gain a better understanding of myself and the motives of other people."
"Arthur Miller's The Crucible is a good read because you get history and drama wrapped in one. Though it doesn't have a excellent hook and can be a bore at the beginning, it's worth reading. A slow start makes for a fast paced plot and as the story takes shape, the reader becomes enchanted by the deceit, brutality, denial, and love that is intricately woven to create a good book. As the reader progresses in the story, he or she will meet John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth(a struggling couple with a marriage on the rocks), Abigail(a clingy teenager with a broken heart and a terrible temper), Reverend Hale(originally from Beverly, he is called to Salem because he specializes in witch craft), Reverend Parris(the uncle of Abigail, he is not well liked by John Proctor), Judge Danforth(an old judge with a stubborn streak), and many other memorable characters. In the play, Abigail and her friends are caught in the woods dancing by her uncle, Reverend Parris; Betty, the daughter of Parris, takes it upon herself to get them all out of trouble by feigning illness. This is where the story gets spun out of control, as Abigail seizes the opportunity(with both hands) to get Elizabeth out of the picture as the town starts to blame witch craft on Betty's state. The people of the town want all of those who are accused to be expunged...until their friends and the paradigms of the community are next on the gallows. Suspenseful and so much more, Miller will have readers swooning once they have gotten into the plot of the play."
"This play is plagiarized directly from a movie called 'Day of Wrath' by the Danish director Dreyer.
Dreyer was raised in a strict Lutheran home and he understood spiritual fervor. All of his immortal movies deal with religious feeling in some way.
Sham Hack Miller writes about the Salem witch trials like he is producing an episode of Dateline on the subject. He has no understanding of this event and he is only interested in drawing parallels between Salem and Senator McCarthy. He is a disgrace to American literature and should be ignored."
