"One of my very favorite books ever, and the first book in one of my favorite series of books in the world. If it weren't for reading Elizabeth Peters as a kid (and as an adult, too :) ) I would definitely be a different writer now - she has been a huge influence on me ever since I first read this book at the age of 12. (I can't even count how many times I've re-read it since then!)
Crocodile on the Sandbank is hilarious and wonderful, a historical mystery/adventure starring the fabulously strongminded Amelia Peabody and her perfect love interest, Egyptologist Radcliffe Emerson. It has mummies, murders, young ladies with scandalous pasts, and wonderful banter throughout. As a writer, this book (and series) taught me a huge amount about voice, dialogue, and characters; as a reader, it just fills me with glee every time I re-read it."
"I put an * next to my favorites (since they get a bit formulaic), but I've read them all and if you have time to read them, they're all fun and form a complete narrative (except I recommend skipping #11).
1. Crocodile On The Sandbank* 2. The Curse Of The Pharaohs 3. The Mummy Case 4. Lion In The Valley* 5. Deeds Of The Disturber 6. The Last Camel Died At Noon* 7. The Snake, The Crocodile & The Dog 8. The Hippopotamus Pool 9. Seeing a Large Cat 10. The Ape who Guards the Balance 11. Guardian of the Horizon-this was written later, I think, and I didn't like a part of it (could skip it!) 12. The Falcon at the Portal*-better have the next one available; you'll want to pick it right up 13. He Shall Thunder in the Sky* 14. Lord of the Silent 15. The Golden One 16. Children of the Storm 17. The Serpent on the Crown 18. Tomb of the Golden Bird"
"Oh Amelia Peabody...This is another reread from my hermited middle school years. Thankfully, this is just as much fun as I remember it. The mystery is really carried by Peabody's strong, funny narrative voice -- it's really hard to resist such an engaging (if intimidating) personality. The "mystery" at hand isn't the most complex. The only main characters featured in the book are pretty evenly divided between "the good guys" and "the bad guys." I also love this book for its tea-cozy attitude toward romance. Although it is technically a novel for adults, most references to Peabody and Emerson kissing are structured around lovely sentences like "A short time later..." or "We didn't talk much after that." I may be misquoting, as I don't have the book in front of me, but you get the idea. Reading this again also made me remember the period of time in which I desperately wanted to be an Egyptologist.
Actually, I would still like to be an Egyptologist... I'm looking forward to rereading the rest of the series!"
"Amelia Peabody is the quintessetial Victorian tourist. There is nothing she cannot do- well, unless she leaves her trusty parasol at home. With her parasol in tow, she is indestructible. Especially in a pushy crowd. Alas, little does she know when she boards a boat to Egypt that she will soon lose her heart.... in more ways than one. Elizabeth Peters masters the fine line between truth and fantasy. She does an incredible job of illustrating how willing we are to believe the least likely explanation.... especially when caught in the spell of the nights aboard a steamer on the Nile. Yet Amelia is sharp, and will get to the bottom of every unexplainable detail..... also with the help of her copious lists. A wonderful series of events unfolds, in this the first of the Amelia Peabody mysteries. Adventure, archaeology, mystery, and fine British wit,....prepare to be captivated."
