About this title: Music and friendship change the lives of a cricket, a mouse, a cat, and a young boy in New York City's Time Square subway station. Chester, a relocated Connecticut cricket, finds life in New York City lonely and difficult until he is taken in by Mario Bellini, the son of the couple who run the subway station's rather unsuccessful newsstand. Chester also bonds with two others who live in the subway station--Tucker the mouse and Harry the Cat. Chester, Tucker, and Harry worry about the Bellini family and fear that lack of business at the newsstand will drive the family into financial ruin. ...

"Audiotape. This would be a great book to listen to as I did. The cricket has perfect pitch and can immitate any song upon hearing it once. I borrowed it from the library and I think I got more out of it since I could hear the classic pieces that the book talks about. Kids would not get that unless they had had music training. Interesting and appropriate 5th grade and lower."
"I liked this book! It was a really cute story about a cricket, a mouse, and a cat hanging out in Times Square, doing their thing.
I think I especially liked it because I've BEEN to Times Square!!!! Only for like 2 seconds but it was good to be able to kind of "see" the scenes of the book in my head.
This would be a great read-aloud for basically any grade - the characters are well-written, the language isn't too much for a little kid, and the story moves along. It's not amazingly action-packed, but I think that's okay.
All in all, a nice little book for a casual read. I hear there are some more with the same characters so maybe I'll check them out!"
"somebody just reminded me of this! it was one of my favorite stories to read when i was a kid. i still remember thinking of how cool it would be to have a cricket for a little pet and keep it in a little bamboo cage. and the scene where the cricket os singing and all the levels of the subway stop to listen to the song is still in my mind after all these years. and they say that the power of the written word is nothing... and that if you spend time reading as a kid (as opposed to learning how to shoot automatic weapons, wield knives and jack cars playing video games as your training for a promising career gang banging), you're a loser."
