"The book I chose to read was Crash. This was a book that I just pulled out from my teacher's bookshelf. I read the description of what the book was going to be about n the back and it looked like an interesting book. This book was about how a boy named Crash Coogan(a football player) and his best friend Mike, tease a boy named Penn Webb. At the end, I just felt bad about how they treated Webb but Crash finally stopped. What I liked about the author's writing (Jerry Spinelli) was that he got staright to to the point when you start reading the book. Some author's take a while in books to introduce the main characters and what the book is about. The author's point to this book was that when you tease people, you are going to start realizing how miserable you are making that person feel and you can take things to far. Honestly, this book should be recommended to all students in school. These situations happen in real life and its sad when you see children having to go through this. I could relate this book to another book I read called The Outsiders. This gang called the Socs, just thought they were beigger than everyone and use to just tease people and make them feel bad about themselves. In one sentence I could say, making people feel miserable will finally have a positive effect on you. I learned that now-a-days kids can be cruel and unfortunately these kids have to suffer. Some kids learn from their mistakes like Crash, but others just keep on going. I would have liked the author to improve on the appearance of the book cover. It's creative and amusing but it would have went more with the book if he included kids bullying others"
"John "Crash" Coogan has everything going for him. He's a high school football and track star from a good family with pizza and TV and all the right brand names. Together with his friend Mike Deluca he teases his strange neighbor Penn Webb, the quaker boy who doesn't eat meat, goes out for cheerleading, and believes Missouri river mud can cure disease. But when Crash's life starts to fall apart he sees Webb's kindness and begins to stand up him. As his eyes open his world begins to change.
Simultaneously a very easy, quick read and an ALA Best Books for YA award winner Spinelli uses clear, plain, simple English to craft a meaningful story. Having Crash as the narrator makes it very straightforward and authentic, and Spinelli adds his own subtle wit on teenage life. Thus it's accessible to readers on the lower end of the spectrum but enjoyable for those on the higher. It does follow the "Spinelli formula" of adding an innocent/different person to an opposing society but it breaks out of the rut by taking it to original places as Crash develops around his sick grandfather, Scooter. Athletic content makes it more appropriate for boys and wording more toward younger, simpler readers.
"Excellent piece of a book. Powerful to see Crash's descent into humility when he suddenly realizes that Penn Webb has everything important in life that he doesn't. Kinda weird that all these kids were in 7th grade, they acted like high-school seniors. And maybe I can only say that because I've been through high school. Regardless, it was powerful, and considering that pride is one of the hardest to get over, and most widespread human defects, it's always a treat to see a character learn humility, even a much-loved Crash Coogan."
