"The book makes the point that suburbanization did not begin when expressways were built from the cities to the hinterlands. Suburbs began as soon as there were cities and grew in direct proportion to the available transportation technology (i.e. commuter trains, streetcars, automobiles)."
"Surprisingly interesting study on the development of American suburbia and its negative effect on city centers. Didn't realize studies on population shifts could be so interesting!"
"If you have strong but hard to explain or substantiate feelings about the suburbs, read this book. I read it for school and I imagine it's probably dated at this point, but it helped me to understand why on earth we have these sprawling suburbs, and what made them the way they are. We do still follow a lot of these patterns today, but I don't even think we know why any more. They're so ingrained in us that even recent attempts to revitalize urban cores have been guided by this suburbanizing mentality. I want to re-read it and see how it holds up. If you live in KC, there's some special interest (history of the Plaza included). Also for KC people, the premise of this book is pretty similar to the premise of the permanent exhibit at the Johnson County Museum of History. Read this book and take the field trip."
