"I remember watching this television series on PBS when it aired originally back in 1980. So here's the deal. Sagan was a die-hard atheist and I am a sold-out Christian. I disagree with him vehemently on just about every page-sometimes (depending on the chapter) maybe even every sentence. But his style is so engaging, and the material he brings together (especially the history) is just so dang captivatingly interesting, I can't help myself. (I first learned what a googol and a googolplex were from him, for crying out loud. That, at least, is worth a little love.) If you have the right grid to filter all the information through (i.e. a good grounding in Christian apologetics and worldview discourse) there's actually a good deal here to appreciate."
"I definitely learned a lot from the book, mostly about the solar system, but also about the library of Alexandria and how the world lost centuries of progress when it was destroyed.
I was a little surprised by the strong opinions that came out in the book, not that the opinions were there, but that they were often feebly supported in my opinion. Maybe that has something to do with the target audience and general public knowledge of science, but I would have been more likely to consider Sagan's ideas more seriously if he had seemed to consider any other ideas himself. Now that I danced around it, he's pretty atheist, which is fine, but he came off like a very aggressive atheist.
But hey, I learned some interesting things about astronomy and its history."
"This book is a bit different from the usual space and time sensationalism of hard core science. I like Cosmos because Sagen starts centuries back to when men's thoughts began to contemplate the universe and life as we know it. He brings all aspects of science into the "stuff of stars" such as reproduction and the anomalies of life.
It's a more broad overlook of what makes up our science before he shoots us out into space.
I was left with a connection of the curiosity of our forbearers who used to wonder over the most simple concepts that are common knowledge today. I wonder how much we are curious today about what our great-great-great grandchildren will think as common simplicity.
I love how this book drove the evolution of life and the thoughts of man home to the reader."
