"To call this my least favorite of Davies' trilogies would be a disservice to a book that I spent many hours savoring, and was sad to see end. But if rankings were being forced at gunpoint, I'd have to place this after the Deptford and Salterton Trilogy. The story takes place in a university, and Davies definitely mines the comedic possibilities of the setting. My favorite of the three novels is the second - What's Bred in the Bone, which is analogous in many ways to A Mixture of Frailties in that it covers the live and development of an artist."
"am torn, re. rating, between 3 & 4: I want to be at 3.5, I think. thoughts to hold while I'm trying to figure out quite how I feel about this: the characters were all beautifully-drawn automatons, & there were brief passages of feeling that I wish had been frequent-er. 'Rebel Angels' was probably the best, though I did like Cornish as a character; on occasion I felt as though the books were trying too hard to extend an unextendable allegory. did enjoy the sheer breadth, though: Davies is rather overly well-informed, and talks about everything & anything (cabbages & kings) quite effortlessly."
