"A very good layman introduction to philosophy. Easily readable and applicable to your own life. It has easy to absorb quotes and philosophies which you could use to affect your life.
I like the way it focuses on some of the major life gripes e.g. frustration, lack of money. I think this draws the reader in.
I don't think this book will date as such as it covers the fundamental emotions of humans. As an optimist I liked it."
"I had purchased this book shortly after seeing the author on Book TV. I began reading this book and lost interest after Soctates was given the poison. I then became very interested in history and went back to this book due to the fact I ran out of books to read one weekend. I picked up the book and began reading it again and enjoyed it very much. It discusses various philosopers and helped me understand this topic enough to read Ciscero."
"though some may find this book intellectually offensive, i quite enjoyed the cartoony philosophy lessons and the random pictures scattered throughout. i firmly believe that more nonfiction books should have lots and lots of pictures.
i particularly enjoyed the Nietzsche chapter ("Consolation for Difficulties"), which, among its many gems, includes:
in discussing N's antipathy to alcohol - "In the spring of 1871, Nietzsche went on holiday with his sister to the Hotel de Parc in Lugano. The hotel bill for 2-9 March shows that he drank fourteen glasses of milk . . . . 'I cannot advise all more spiritual natures too seriously to abstain from alcohol absolutely. Water suffices.'"
and
"Finally, at the beginning of January 1889, Nietzsche broke down at Turin's Piazza Carlo Alberto and embraced a horse . . . ."
poor Nietzsche. he's so great! i wish i could quote the whole weird and entertaining chapter here.
i also must remark that i found this book quite consoling (again, in contrast to when i first read it years ago). i feel much better about my life now!
"Great book for those wishing to understand basic philosophy, be generally well-read, or those interested in self-help books. The author focuses each chapter on one real-life struggle (frustration, Not having enough money, unpopularity) and the tactics classic philosophers used to address them. De Botton intellectualizes the self-help book, while simultaneously using easy language which makes a philosopher's idea accessible to anyone. It is a quick and easy read and, like all good philosophy, it makes you think."
