"Attention grabbing story right from the beginning...it was quite a bit of fact with fiction mixed in - or was it the other way around?? Wow...the author was so convincing that I don't know for sure!!
Michael Crichton did a lot of research on his subject...and I got a bit buried in the technical descriptions. However, I did LOVE his portrayal of the Congo along with the plants and animals which have existed there unchanged for centuries...and the "evolutional" changes that have taken place over time. I was actually feeling pretty itchy and could practically feel misquitoes buzzing around my head (I HATE misquitoes)!!What I learned (whether it be fact or fiction?) about primates, their intelligence and similarities to humans for me was fascinating! Loved it!!

"About a corporation hired to extract blue diamonds out of the jungle of the Congo rain forest. Their first expedition ends in a mysterious disaster. The reader follows the team on their 2nd expedition. Also with them is Amy, a young gorilla taught sign language and her trainer. They enter the mystical rain forest competing against other expeditions trying to reach the diamonds as well. Once they arrive at their destination they face an unknown enemy. A very good read, finished it in about 2 days. I like how Crichton chronicles the book like a diary and the chapters are in dates, like the book was written from somebody who went on the expedition. As always Crichton uses advanced scientific and technological concepts well."
"This book Congo is written by A well known writer Michael Crichton, and Crichton is famous for the best seller "Jurasic Park". The first page of this book explian how much we do not know about Africa, and the auther expresses a wrong our sight about Africa. Africa is bigger than North America, also the biggest continent in the world, but many people have bias against Africa. This novel's background Congo is a country of Africa.
The U.S., Europe, and Japant try to make developed technology, and they try to find a diamon which is useful to make raser, so Earth Recource Technology Services Inc (ERTS) despatches some people to Africa. After the last correspondence, the expedition's correspondence is turned off. The president of ERTS R.B. Travis sees some dead bodies and shadows which shape like gollia by Camer, so Travis makes Dr. Karen Ross find the expedition with a new expedition because she is fiance of a man who is a member of former expedition and he also Travis's son, so her advanture is started.
I love Chrichton's novels because his novels are based on specific reasons, and his explanations are alwaus perfact, so I am really excited. So I am sure he will explain about story in this novel being nice and making my blood run!

The expedition met a gorila which name is Amy. Amy can communicate with human by using sign language. To matter of worse, they also met a flight accident and wild animals in the jungle. Moreover, they fight with killer primates, and they killed them. The rest of survivors stay their lives difficultly. Helped by Amy, they decided to go back to their countries. (Amy said go away, don't come and here bad) They found some air ballons in a crashed plane and by using them they escape from Zinj in Congo.
As I stated that people overlook the land of Africa, we recognize that North America, and Russia are bigger than Africa, and some people have misunderstand about Africa. In this novel, Congo is really attractive place, because of Congo there is a surprising primate's civilization.
Another point is the author's expression of this book. Michale Chriton is famous in his abundant of sceintific knowledge. Of course, in this novel, he shows a laptop computers and an optical comminication. Considered of the time which this novel was written, these thought are really interesting and impressing. His novels are always surprising becuase he give us a new infromation and express about that with a lot of details. The weak point of this book is...Compare to his another novel "Jurassic Park" he would not use exciting expression. But I recomment if you have not read his other books, read this book :)"
"Kirkus Review: Entertainer-educator Crichton, that clever devil, has done it again - by dressing up one of the oldest book/movie scenarios around with enough capsulized science, history, and geography to keep readers happily on their toes. It's an expedition to darkest Africa, to the northeast corner of the Congo rain forest in Zaire, in search of a lost city (Zinj) full of diamonds and danger. Old hat, right? Wrong. Because this expedition, led by Karen Ross of Earth Resources Technology Services (ERTS) in Houston, is the nth degree in hi-tech - portable computers, laser-beam navigation, satellite TV-hookup with Houston - and the juxtaposition of super-gadgetry with nature at its wildest is simply splendid. Furthermore, since a previous ERTS trek to Zinj was decimated by gorilla-like creatures (according to videotape analysis), primate expert Peter Elliot is along; and with him is adorable gorilla Amy - who understands English and is fluent in sign language. (By coincidence, Amy's been having nightmares about a city that looks just like legendary Zinj.) So there's lively lecture material a-plenty - computers, zoology, linguistics, Congo botany, etc. - as Karen, Peter, Amy, and mercenary Munro (what used to be the Robert Shaw role) head towards Zinj via parachute jump, river-rapids, and mountain-climbing. . . while fending off cannibals, an angry hippo, guided missiles, and sophisticated sabotage by a rival German-Japanese team. (The Zinj diamonds are the raw material for computer-chips that will revolutionize everything.) And when they do arrive at Zinj, where the rival team has been massacred, the ERTS team is soon under attack by this odd mutant killer-gorilla species - descendants of apes who were long ago trained to be ruthless guards of the diamond hoard.
If you saw the movie Congo, it's nothign like this book. Congo the movie ranks among the worst movies I've ever seen, which was sooooooooo disappointing because I really enjoyed this book and because it had Tim Curry in it (who is one of my favorite actors). Congo the movie SUCKED. Congo the book rocks. As with other Michael Crichton fare, it's a thick book and packed with true information mixed with the fiction so you're never sure if you're reading something that actually happened or not. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has read another Crichton novel and liked it."
