"This is the 3rd Harry Bosch novel I've read and to be honest I probably wouldn't have made it this far in the series except for the fact that I had bought the 3 book collection for Kindle.
There is something I really dislike about a main character whose name I can't pronounce. And Bosch (is it like Box or Botch or what?) had a name that I couldn't hear others saying. So it took some of the love of the novels away from me - especially b/c I think part of this book's strong suit is the conversations between characters.
Harry did grow on me by book 3 though. His hardline ways came off as too macho and too contrived in the first books. This one had the right amount of street cred plus sufficient admonishing from other sources to relegate Harry to "real" status instead of a comic book cartoon-ish cop.
The story is thrilling, but I would suggest reading the books in the right order. Some of the characters appear in the first 2 (Black Echo/Black Ice) and I'm not sure how well you would connect with them if this book was picked up first.
Connelly will wax philosophic every now and then and it doesn't fit well with Bosch's internal monologuing but other than that it's a great standard police detective read - quick, fun, and keeps you guessing."
"Totally amazing again! I was waiting for #2 to come for the Harry Bosch series but this one was due. No need to read in order except I don't know where the girlfriend came from but he covers that briefly. Love reading about MEN detectives that are clear, well-written, entertaining but not too cutesy. Definitely a little repetitive but aren't all men like that? Love the cigarettes and the same suits that he wears. Love that the author doesn't give us everything that he thinks & realizes as Bosch goes along through the investigation. Good character coverage of Money Chandler. Not too much, not too little. Gotta know its the girlfriend who the leak. xx fx"
"This book follows along LAPD detective harry bosch who thought he killed the serial killer the dollmaker 4 years ago in a controversial shootout but now as the trial begins the dollmaker strikes again. harry bosch must figure out the copycat killer before he loses this trial and convince the world who is innocent and who isn't. This is a gritty detective tail but there is a twist to it because you get to go deep into detective bosch's thoughts and unearth things not usually seen or heard."
"This is the third in Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch's crime novels (which don't necessarily need to be read in order), set in a gritty Los Angeles barely recovered from the Rodney King riots. Harry is on trial for the unlawful shooting of the Dollmaker, a serial killer known for strangling prostitutes and then garishly painting their faces with their own makeup. But as the trial begins and Harry finds himself facing L.A.'s toughest lawyer, Honey "Money" Chandler, a note arrives at the police precinct with the Dollmaker's signature. Did Harry kill the wrong person? Or is there somebody out there imitating the Dollmaker? At times, I felt as if the answer would be very obvious and disappointing - the narrative seemed to be heading down a fairly good but unsurprising court drama, with the occasional police procedure thrown in. But this is Connelly and I should have known that the suspense would go up a few notches towards the end, one or two bodies littering the way. If anything, the only slight disappointment in this fun page turner are the cliche ridden romantic scenes between Harry and his girlfriend Sylvia (they even have sex at one point on a blanket laid out in front of a fireplace). Recommended summer read."
