"This is an old cookbook but a very useful one. It is not gourmet. However, it is a cookbook that has a wide range of information and hundreds of recipes, most of which are not complicated. I bought this book to replace my 30-year-old copy that had fallen apart. Recipes for all of the traditional Jewish foods are present -- gefilte fish, challah, chicken soup, cholent, hamentaschen, tzimmes, Passover foods, etc. There are also hundreds of everyday recipes. The Complete American Jewish Cookbook differs from other Jewish cookbooks by the extensive amount of material it contains. In this book, one will even find kosher variations of recipes that mix meat and milk according to non-Jewish cookbooks. One example is chicken-a-la-king. Another one of its strengths is the array of variations on a single recipe. For instance, the basic recipe for muffins is followed by eighteen variations including apple muffins, cranberry muffins, dried-fruit muffins and whole-wheat muffins. For people with limited time to cook, there are easy stir-ins to add interest to vegetables, rice, sweet potatoes, and other foods. I have been pleased with most of the recipes I have tried. The recipes are tasty and reliable. In addition, the book has a good index, a glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms, and an extensive section of useful information from "How to substitute one ingredient for another" to "Servings and pounds (How much to buy)." If you want a good, dependable and easy-to-use Jewish cookbook, the Complete American-Jewish Cookbook is a good one to buy."
