"I understand these are cute stories and they have good morals in them, but frankly I find them kinda of boring, and so do my kids. They are cute though."
"Beatrix Potter was always a favorite during childhood. Mom use to read to us from a collection of select stories. A few Christmases back I asked for some of her books, hoping to revisit the stories. This book was given then, though I never read the whole thing until now.
I knew the first tow stories in the collection well-the tales of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny. They were both in the old collection I knew. But the Second two stories, "The The of the Flopsy Bunnies" and "The Tale of Mr. Tod" were unknown to me. All stories feature Peter Rabbit. "Benjamin Bunny" is a direct sequel to the original story I think everyone is familiar with. The other two stories feature Peter and Benjamin grown up, trying to save their children from mischief and bad ends. The last story, "Mr. Tod" is especially dark with a badger stealing the baby bunnies and hiding them in an oven before he gets in a huge fight with a fox.
Only Beatrix Potter would have one of her rabbits say, "Mu Uncle Bouncer has displayed a lamentable want of discretion for his years." I love the big-word prose for a children's book, let alone the high-falootin' ways she writes things. The first story is the best in the group, a classic, but the following stories are not as strong. "Benjamin Bunny" is kind of a minor misadventure about Peter getting his clothes from the MacGregor's garden. "Flopsy Bunnies" is kind of a rehash of the first story with more rabbits invading the garden. The last story is interesting especially because of how long it is and the focus on the villains (which Potter announces is her goal at the beginning of the story. Although she doesn't call them villains, but "disagreeable people."
As always, her illustrations are often very finely crafted and beautiful."
