As long as one's expectations are for a paean to the research universities, and not a perspective on the general problems of America's colleges and universities, one will not be disappointed. The author spent his career in the rarified air af the top of the academic feeding chain. He acknowledges that, and his primary concerns. Within those limitiations, an o.k. book, but hardly to be compared with William James.
