Flynn delivers his 10th installment of political thriller series based on CIA covert ops bad-ass, Mitch Rapp. Taking place on US soil, Rapp and his band of black ops team chase after a group the terrorists who attack multiple high-profile government counter terrorism targets and high profile politico hot spots all while being vilified on Capitol Hill for some of his more questionable methods by some of the more left-leaning members of the Senate. There are layers of good guys and bad guys and their roles in terrorism presented which makes this a more cerebral read for the thriller genre.
Flynn does a nice job of presenting the psychological make up of many of the primary players of this book - more so than in previous efforts that have focused mostly on his main character. What could have been standard plot and chase thriller really benefits from this treatment and gives at least a dozen characters a more robust feel. This aspect of Flynn's writing has gotten so strong that I found myself at the last page of the book wishing that it was at least 100 pages longer so as to get more of those details through the climax of the novel that wraps in the standard fast paced, jump scene, good guy saves the day you get from a political thriller.
Flynn spends some time trying to honor the various government agencies and the use of torture as a valid method through the discussions had between characters in this book. He does a solid job of presenting some of the finer points of the argument even though the target audience for his novels are already predisposed to agree with him.
For fans of Jack Bauer and Season 7 of 24, this book is definite must read. It hits a lot of the same notes and themes. In many ways Mitch Rapp might be better at being Jack Bauer than Jack Bauer."
