"AMAZING book for those caught in relationships with alcoholics, the chronically ill, or emotionally dependent persons. Beattie carves the way to freedom and wholeness, showing us the gift of letting go. Caring for ourselves and controlling our own destinies is within our grasp. Highly recommend it for those of the "caretaking" bent; I'm reading it twice."
"oh geez... this book brings back so many (bad) memories.. The yellow-marker highlights are embarrassing to read. I have this book in storage because I'm too shamed to display in on my bookshelf. Yet i won't give it away. It's like my little flower in the attic, my little red-headed step-child. I purchased this book back in 1998-99 when I foresaw a very horrible break-up. I guess I was trying to cope with thoughts and feeling that were totally out of my control. At the time it was a good book to read because it made me feel like I understood what was going on in my life, but we ended up breaking up and now years later I realize the book wasn't that great because not only am I still controlling, I actually like it that way."
"My dad found this book for me at a thrift store while I was visiting him in Colorado. It was like 10cents. I rolled my eyes and thought, "yeah, ok". I love this book... after reading it I can't help but feel someone wrote it for me. Somehow it helps me make me a stronger person. It's like medicine for my life. Thanks dad-"
"I can see why this book was recommended to me many years ago, and it's even more wonderful to find that it's not really all that useful to me anymore.
Most of the ideas in here I have read elsewhere. Much like the 12-step programs, it focuses on identifying the problem and behaviors in yourself so you can then work on them which (from experience) I know can be life-changing. There were less concrete skills given, it was more of a guided self-exploration. Not quite what I was hoping for, but I can see how this book could be amazing to someone who needs it."
