"Disappointing follow-up to Freakonomics. Only four chapters with no real original thought. Seems like the authors refused to do any of the dirty work this time around. Main issue - the admittedly intriguing chapter titles only allude to about 5 sentences each. Everything else, although interesting, makes no sense to the organization. Extra star for the economics of prostitution because it was actually informational."
"An extension of the first Freakonomics starts with a continuation of the study of Chicago's underworld, this time the sex trade. Multiple other topics are covered, with cures for global warming covered in depth. I found the stories interesting. They are mostly unrelated, though, outside of the micro-economic take on the issues. The Freakonomics "franchise" feels it would be better met with a magazine or a radio/cable show, sort of a "Statistician's This American Life". I listened to this on audio, and it did sort of feel like Ira Glass' show."
"Been a while since I read Freakanomics, so hard to compare. From what I can remember, they might as well be packaged in one volume, being stylistically identical with no differences in aproach. While thought-provoking, neither is challenging, and both go down better in large gulps, quaffed in one or two sittings (at least that's how I managed them). The authors present astounding information on nearly every page, showing again and again how easily we are deceived by appearances, and what usually remains unseen. Microeconomics is endlessly fascinating to me, offering an approach to human behavior that is applicable to all disciplines."
"This is the sequel to the wildly-popular Freakonomics of 2005. Like its predecessor, this book investigates aspects of our modern society in ways we don't usually think about them. The research and writing are interesting, and present some good seeds of thought and conversation.
In the first chapters, I learned far more about the economics of prostitution than I cared to know; I eventually skipped some of this material. But the rest of the book was more to my liking. Does chemotherapy really make a difference? Is driving drunk safer than walking drunk? Why is it so hard to get doctors to wash their hands? What's the relationship between TV and crime? Are people basically selfish or altruistic? Do car seats for children make a difference?
The book asks, and answers, many fascinating questions. It is worth the read; just be careful about those early chapters."
