"9-12 grade - This work contains all the Tales that are exultant information on Chaucer's words that are unlikely to be known or understood in the way they were meant when he used them. In addition to the portrayal of the age of Chaucer in the tales themselves, the notes add wonderful flavor to them by explaining aspects of Chaucer's society that are behind what he is saying in the tales themselves and in his descriptions of the pilgrims. All told, one gets a wonderful sense of Chaucer's wry wit and an understanding of his age and its concerns and foibles that a translation without such information can hardly provide. A difficult read, but in the high school levels there are so many language arts skills that can be brought into alignment with this piece of work."
"One of my very favorite books of all time. I took a third year Chaucer class that covered his entire works, and The Canterbury Tales was the absolute highlight of the year. I fell in love with the style first; his Rhyme Royale, used in a few of his more serious tales, is set to a lovely rhythm.
The text I read was the original accompanied with copious notes; it was surprisingly easy to pick up on, and by the second or third story, I felt comfortable with the text. Once I got used to it, I truly grew to appreciate the beauty of how he utilizes middle english.
More than that, the stories are amazing and his range of styles is impressive for such an early writer. Comedies, like The Miller's Tale, which is essentially one long dirty joke, are among the most entertaining in The Canterbury Tales. Other stories are great sources of information regarding that period of British history, and others are enlightening towards attitudes about love, marriage, sexuality, religion, and spirituality."
"I've read both the Middle English (original) version and a few of the translated versions, and I've decided to go back to the original and revisit some of my favorite stories. The Tales, like Don Quixote, are one of those works that I'm *always* reading. They are lifetime books, in that there is always something new there, some nuance I've previously overlooked, some linguistic trick, some emotional capture...always something. Always. It is, I believe, probably one of the finest things ever written in the English language for a mass audience.
The book, in parts, is wickedly hysterical and bitingly satirical of the classes and cultural stratification of the era.
Chaucer died in 1400 without finishing the Tales, and the first printing of it wasn't 1476. Previous to the first press run, the only copies were handwritten manuscripts. The first serious attempt to restore the genuine text of the Canterbury Tales was made by Tyrwhitt in 1775, three hundred years after they were first printed by Caxton. Tyrwhitt's edition of the Canterbury Tales has enjoyed the highest reputation, and this is the version which I am currently reading."
"Before the beginning of each school year at Maine Township High School South we students had to go to pick up our books at the gymnasium ahead of time. Prior to the senior year I went alone and was very excited by the required texts. Having finished all my state requirements for graduation, I was only taking advanced placement courses and the texts were all college level.
One of them was Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in the original, albeit with copious notes. The middle English was daunting, but, inspired, I endeavoured to read the thing before the start of classes. Fortunately, Mother, raised with Norwegian as her natal tongue and German as her language of instruction, found Chaucerian English pretty easy, so, with her help I was able to get through the text. (A lot of the problem of reading middle English is solved if you just learn to sound it out and then read it aloud).
Then, with the beginning of classes, we got into the Chaucer. One of the first things we were told was to buy a version of Canterbury Tales translated into modern English at the bookstore..."
