"The entire Gone series is a very frustrating read. In this book ecspecially, nothing ever goes the way you want it to and new problems and conflicts are always arising. I also feel that there were many directions in which the author could have taken this novel (the first book had a very open ending), and that the author decided to unfortunately pursue all of them. In fact, there are so many conflicts it is almost impossible to keep track of them all and at the end of the series I'm not at all sure how they're to be tied together. However, the author does a good job of creating suspense in the plot and even though long in pages Hunger is a pretty quick read. The dialogue and interaction between characters is interesting and realistic. My favorite character was Diana, the one who gave up so much for love. Indeed, all of the characters in this book are strong characters, and perhaps make this book worth reading for some."
Not quite as good as the first book, Hunger pretty much takes a break from the main issue (which I thought was "How do we get out of this hell hole?!?") and instead focuses on... money... and clubbing (make that, McClubbing *rolls eyes*) and food, which is understandable, because after a 3 month lapse, nothing has changed except the stockpile of munchies is shrinking drastically, and there's a horrible foreshadowing in the form of our FAYZ inhabitants... looking at each other and seeing... lunch? Blechhh.
For me, after the ending of Gone which left me bursting with questions about what the Fayz really is, and what Little Pete has to do with it, and how they're going to deal, and what the hell those shape-shifting toothy hungry things are, reading this one just... deflated all of that anticipatory excitement. Grant is a terrific, brilliant writer (he's got the pubescent psychology and survival drama down, painfully so) but the plot was thin. And the end, blechhh (more cliffhanging).
Overall, still a worthy read, but *shrugs* yeah, disappointed. On to book 3!"
"I think I liked this a little but more than the first book. The first I felt like the author was still finding his way to the story; it didn't seem as polished as I wanted it to be. From the beginning of this book, I felt like he was going somewhere, and it's exactly like the back of the book says: Stephen King meets Lord of the Flies. I like that he made Sam and Caine's relationship a little more complex by the end, less good versus evil and more of a gray area. I also like that he wasn't afraid to go places, like the freaks versus normals war, or people dying. Sure, a lot of them were brought back to life, but some like Duck (and Drake?) weren't. Who knows what will come in the next volume (surely more about Brittney, the not-exactly-dead girl), but I think he left it in a good place. His imagination is infinite, and I'm really enjoying it."
"After the great start in "Gone" I had high hopes for "Hunger" and it delivered. Although a bit slow at first as it deals with the bureaucratic side of kids running a town without adults, this is necessary in order to drive the characters to do what must later be done.
As the mutants' powers increase so does the evil of the entity in the mine, which in turn draws the reader further into this new "Lord of the Flies" scenerio. In TLOTF we had Ralph, Simon, Jack and Roger whereas in the Gone series we see Sam, Duck, Caine, and Drake filling in the classic's parts quite respectibly. Add to these a variety of other characters and the Gone series may go even beyond Golding's masterpiece, though the purist would argue against the sci-fi aspect surpassing the real possibility of the original.
In any case, if you liked the first book then "hunger" is right up your alley."
