"This was an accidental read in a way, as I got the book as a gift from my daughter who went to a Mitch Albom book signing in Philadelphia. It is an uplifting book, despite the ultimate death of "The Reb". If everyone's rabbi, pastor, reverend, imam or whatever had the faith and joy for life that Rabbi Al Lewis had, and transmitted that to their "flock", the world might be a happier place. Mitch Albom described the Reb so well, in my mind's eye he looked pretty much like his picture at the back of the book. Despite his profound Jewish faith, the Reb was very much a live and let live kind of guy, meaning so long as you get to God, the route there isn't always the most important thing. Henry Covington comes to his faith from a completely different angle, but a no less profound one. His determination in the face of pretty overwhelming odds, and faith that God will provide, is inspiring. And the ultimate connection between all three of these people, the seeming "Aha" moment for Mitch Albom , is one of those little miracle moments that I like to find in life. Like when the Sunday sermon seems directly spoken to you alone. I've read The Five People that You Meet in Heaven, but now I feel compelled to get Tuesdays with Morrie, which Albom referenced a bit here. His discussion of real people and their life events is very interesting. I would highly recommend this book to anyone."
"I know that Mitch Albom's work tends to polarize people. It's not that his subject matter makes you 'take sides', but rather that there are those who like his simple storytelling and plots, and those who don't. I happen to like his work in general.
Sure, the writing is simple. And this being a work of non-fiction, the plot doesn't really have to take shape like his works of fiction; nonetheless it needs a plot. I can see why Albom chooses to focus on 2 characters here--mostly because I can't see reading one book about the Rabbi or the Preacher alone. But together, you understand how Albom did some soul searching why writing this and had to question his own faiths and own beliefs.
There were parts that I thought were a cheaper imitation of his 1st work--"Tuesdays with Morrie", but if you liked that book, or like Albom's work in general, it's a definite read.
If you're skeptical about Albom's work or haven't read him before, this is still a book to check out--it's a quick read but one that will have you questioning your own beliefs and what's important."
"I stopped in Borders on my way to the airport to pick up another book. A nice lady at the store noticed the book I was holding and had nothing but good to say about it. Then she led me to another section where "Have a Little Faith" was on the shelf and gushed about the book and about how great it was.
I am a sucker for a good book so I figured I would give it a shot. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone. I admit when it comes to the Jewish faith I am rather ignorant so this was if nothing else a small glimpse into the life of a Rabbi and a window into a small part of the Jewish life. I was surprised to read terms I was familiar with in my own faith and felt quite enlightened.
The other part of the story is about another man's journey as he found God. It is a compelling story and one that should come as a lesson to anyone that people can change for the better no matter how low they have been and what things they may have done in the past."
"Very similar to "Tuesdays with Morrie" but this time the book is about his rabbi from his childhood. I would have loved to Albert Lewis - he sounds like such a genuine, intelligent, caring, spiritual, and quirky man. Very touching book about how one lives life so that their spirit can live on in others. Along with sharing his relationship with his childhood rabbi, the book also talks about another man of God, Henry Covington who had a very "checkered" past but found his true calling as a minister in poverty stricken area of Detroit. Mitch Albom contrasts these two men who are so different in their lifestyle, faiths, backgrounds, and their spiritual path, but he points out how both men have such an important part in helping their congregation. I was surprised to find the pictures of the two men at the end of the book - I wish I had seen them sooner so I could have visualized these men as they really were/are rather than forming my own picture in my mind since they ARE real men."
