"I read this for a class on Australian literature. I recall liking it a lot, partially for its interesting and strong allegorical elements. When researching it for a paper, I believe one description referred to this novel as something of an Australian "cult classic." It's been a few years, though, so don't shoot me if I'm wrong."
"like so much of tim winton's work, cloudstreet is a wry and arid look at the australian landscape (which is itself wry and arid). the characters and their turns of phrase and ways of thinking are immediately recognisable to any romantic australian. however, it is perhaps, just that - an amalgam of romanticised australianisms. this in itself would be tolerable (like an occasional "johnno" or "arvo"), but for the fact that the plot of cloudstreet is long-winded and forgettable. like the stories of the two families dovetailing into one, so it shows the dovetailing of all the charms of winton's work with his excesses. this is not a book for reading before bed over a period of months, rather, it requires a sustained holiday effort."
"To say I read Cloudstreet is a half-truth, because I only managed to make it halfway before I had to return it to the library. While Winton is a master of the postcolonial moment and can bring ordinary everyday life into full blown colour, I couldn't engage with it like I wanted to. I'm sad about that fact because it's tauted as one of his finest books. I'm happy to say I gave it a go but there's so much else out there to read I couldn't see myself spending too much more time with it. Sorry Tim. I still love your writing though."
"i read this in high school. i did not enjoy it at all. i don't like the way that tim winton writes, with no "speech marks". it drives me crazy.
the story was ok, but that in itself was not enough to improve the book for me since i felt like when i read, it was in a monotone and i did not enjoy that.
it has also put me off reading other tim winton books (i have tried a few) but not finished them because of that."
