About this title: Headstrong and beautiful, the young housemaid Sally Jupp is put rudely in her place, strangled in her bed behind a bolted door. Coolly brilliant policeman Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard must find her killer among a houseful of suspects, most of whom had very good reason to wish her ill.
"Cover Her Face" is P. D. James's electric debut novel, an ingeniously plotted mystery that immediately placed her among the masters of suspense.

"Why did I read an English country-house murder mystery immediately after complaining about same? I suppose because this one was actually good. The odd thing about the two James mysteries I've read so far is that while I enjoy the process of actually reading them--James's writing style and pace pleases me--I find myself with very little to say about them afterwards in terms of their content. It's sort of like the whole thing deflates as soon as you find out the solution to the mystery. For that reason, I don't suppose I'll read more of these unless I happen to pick one up on a fallow library visit."
"I like the Dalgliesh shows on PBS, and I like the books as well or even more.
This story held my interest and kept me guessing until near the end (I did figure out whodunit before the reveal).
The writer does a good job of creating and describing characters who, at first, appear to be quite unpleasant but as the story moves on these characters are given depth and you can understand that all is not always what it seems."
"Dated (the shame of the unwed mother!), very derivative of Agatha Christie. All the suspects are sullen, hateful, vengeful, have chips on their shoulders, are emotional cripples, etc. It gets kind of tiresome after awhile. And it always bothers me when the lead detective gets a lusty glimmer in his eye for someone he was previously interrogating, as Dalgliesh does in the last paragraph. Chinese wall, writers, Chinese wall."
"P.D. James definitely improved with practice. I am certainly glad this wasn't the first book of hers I ever read, as it would have been my last. Boring, predictable characters, not a very interesting mystery, and a ridiculous solution."
