"I really enjoyed reading this book despite the annoying Alex Katz cover whom I dislike. And I would have powerfully enjoyed this had there not been the distracting & to my mind obsequiousness of too much name dropping. The author could have easily made all of the same points without targeting the Hollywood elite and community. It seemed a transparent attempt to sell more books, to attract certain readers based on famous people-each time it struck me as traveling down a steep hill on a sled, enjoying the ride only to hit a rock and temporarily bump up, then resume the fun smoothly. Setting it in Hollywood and NYC certainly was possible without naming names in such a blatant obvious manner. The book club could have existed and her ability to speak to Howard through gossip channels still could have materialized....I don't know, I guess it is more complex than maybe I could construct. This is my only true objection and it is a shame as Anne is a great main character. So many of the literature references were new to me and a strong appeal. I have always loved his perfume pieces in the NYTimes magazine and The Emperor of Scent is a hallucinatory read. I look forward to his next novel and only hope it includes people of non celebrity status."
"You or Someone Like You by Chandler Burr. Story of Howard and Anne, who meet getting Ph.D.s in English lit at Columbia. Howard is from Brooklyn Jewish family; Anne grew up in English-American diplomatic family, moving all over the world. Howard builds a powerful career in Hollywood as a liaison with New York book world. Anne raises their son and manages the house and servants and runs a wildly popular book discussion group for the Hollywood elite, who love her strong opinions. Even though the book opens with Howard leaving Anne, then flashes back, I did not see what was coming. In the beginning it felt like very heady chicklit (even tho' writer is man), but the intensity, both narrative and intellectual, just built and built. Anne's climactic public critique took my breath away. I loved it."
"I liked the literary references in this book very much. And, I also liked the reflections on the characters' lives as college students. I thought the references to real people in the business were needlessly distracting because I'm one removed from some of them and it made it a little harder to focus on the story - I like my fiction to be fiction. But, more than anything I found the story's resolution shallow and utterly unbelievable. And, other than one super tangential character, I don't think I liked any of the characters at all - even the main character whom I think I was supposed to empathize with."
"Her world is slowly falling apart. The usual attributes she depends on from her British upbringing cool, rational, calm are failing her as her family drifts apart. Her husband, raised as an orthodox jew but always had kept his religion at an arms length is now embracing orthodoxy and pushing her away. Her son came out of the closet and which has pushed her husband even further away. How do you manage to deal with something you have no control over that's been your life, your bedrock, for the past 17 years? This novel combines this aforementioned familial strife with Anne's flowering book club for the Hollywood elite. I love the use of literature and the discussion of religion as a form of isolation. A very interesting adventure."
