"This was even better than Oryx and Crake. Found myself almost wanting to join the Gardeners by the end -- well, maybe an atheist version of them. Loved Toby the "dry witch" (such a kick-ass character), loved that the main characters were all female, loved the revisiting of the Crakers at the end. The two books are kind of yin and yang -- this is from the other side, outside the compound, as well as being from a female perspective. I loved that the commune had its own problems and politics because it was also made up of individual personalities. I thought the end was great, better than O&C, which left me wanting more. I've also heard some of the hymns from the book being performed (part of the book launch tour), and it was fantastic. One thing: Margaret, if you really think genre is just a marketing invention (I agree), then why are you so eager to peel off the "science fiction" label every chance you get? Speculative, scifi, what's the big diff, other than not wanting to be associated with the Non-Literary Genres?"
"i love margaret atwood. particularly because she'll throw you into her world without explanation or backstory. you figure it out as you go. no hand outs. its intelligent writing and when you crack the story code, you're that much more invested in its outcome.
i loved this book as much as i loved oryx and crake. i've worked in books a long time, and when oryx and crake came out, it seemed like i loved it a lot more than other readers. i'm hoping that readers have now caught up to it, and also embrace year of the flood.
what at first seems like an alien and highly contrived world starts to point back to a time when consumerism, technology and vanity jumped out of control: in other worlds, now. this is a logical extension of the decisions we're making today. there are other possibilities, but i bet atwood's onto something here. she manages to not point an entirely bleak or cynical interpretation, at that. the characters are adapted to their world, and accept its terms much as we do today. it is what it is. but to readers entering this world, its pretty jarring and awful.
i highly recommend reading oryx and crake before opening this one up, but do open it up."
"I would really give this a 4.5, just couldn't give it a five though.
This newest Atwood is by no means a disappointment to the devoted fan, or to the casual reader. If you've read Oryx and Crake, this book will fill in some gaps and provide an actual ending to the story of Jimmy (Snowman), Ren, Amanda, et al. I remember enjoying the fact that the end of Oryx and Crake did not wrap everything up neatly and tidily, and this doesn't either, but there is much more satisfaction. The main body of the book is really a character study (big surprise) of two women. Toby and Ren are women that become associated with a cult like group called the Gardeners who seek to be closer to God's creation through gardening, beekeeping, simple living, etc. They reject the rampant corporate lifestyle and go back to a biblical base while worshiping saints like Dian Fossey for their work in conservation. The reader gets a great picture of the lives of these women in a time where law and order reigns only in the ways that it helps the corporate infrastructure. Atwood's superb depiction of the Gardeners is layered with hymns, "sermons," and discussions of right and wrong. Atwood makes it plain that the Gardeners have an interest in the difference between faith and religion, belief and action. Right and wrong isn't black and white and self-preservation and preservation of God's creation is of the utmost importance. The fact that after the "waterless flood," the gardeners make up a large proportion of the survivors may or may not be a testament to their beliefs."
Summary: A plague has wiped out the majority of the world and the God's Gardeners cult had been preparing for the end-times (the Waterless Flood) all along. Two women, who were members of God's Gardeners have survived the plague. One, Ren, because she was in an isolation unit (almost like an apartment) where she was recuperating after being abused by one of the patrons in the sex club where she worked and possibly contaminated. The other, Toby, had locked herself in the beauty spa (heavily secured corporation run) she was the manager of the night the plague hit full force. The story is told from three points of views. Ren's and Toby's with both of them telling their present situation and remembering their past life with the God's Gardener's. The third point of view comes from the past and follows the God's Gardeners year by year through sermons given by Adam One which end with a hymn.
Comments: I really enjoyed Oryx and Crake and dived into this book as soon as it came into the library for me. The book was a quick read. I always find Atwood's writing to flow so naturally her books are often hard to put down, and this was no exception. Ren and Toby are full, realistic characters, quite opposite in nature from each other but both emotionally draw the reader into their lives and thus the book. Atwood's feminist side shows through here as we see a comparison between the two women. Ren has been treated kindly then thrown aside and later used and abused by men because of her good looks while Toby has been used and abused and later ignored by men because of her plain looks.
The God's Gardeners cult was pretty creepy in my opinion. Atwood has created a religion which is Old Testament based, yet Pagan in nature and is full of Saint Days. While the group believes in an Old Testament God, they are eco friendly by worshipping animals and nature and are strictly vegan. Near the beginning she has a St. Mowat of the Wolves day and I said to myself, "Oh, Lord please do not let her have a St. David Suzuki day in here or I'm going to through this book across the room". He did appear, but fortunately it was near the end of the book and I held back my urge.
I would suggest reading Oryx and Crake first. The books are not dependant on each other but this one does reference many things from the first book and you are going to wandering around in the dark as either no explanations, or only brief ones are given. A very quick explanation of the events of the first book are summed up for you at the crucial point in Year of the Flood but a reader will be missing out on a whole book's worth of insider information if they journey into this without having read Oryx and Crake first.
Ultimately though, I was disappointed with book. It was a good enough book. Fans of Oryx and Crake will have to read it to find out the rest of the story. But I just didn't get into the story that much. It wasn't a page turner, even though it read quick enough. The plot kept moving forward but there never was any real suspense, reveals, moments of great emotion or climax even to satisfy. Well, there is a climax and an ending but they are small and weak and I ended the book with a "hmmph"."
