Going back to the very beginnings of the classic Star Trek, the film tells how James T. Kirk, the half-Vulcan Spock, Dr McCoy, engineer Montgomery Scott and crew members Chekov, Sulu and Uhura first came together as rookie Starfleet recruits, and ...

"Generally, I enjoy Star Trek film novelizations. Because they're written from the original screenplay, they often have nice little pieces of back story that sometimes get left on the editing room floor. Reading this film's novelization was a bit different. Some of those back story pieces are in there, particularly as they relate to Kirk. However, what was different for me was the realization that there were obviously things in the film that were "thrown in" or tweaked in the last minute that actually added quite a bit to the film that were missing in the novelization. This isn't so much a criticism of Foster's work as the author as much as it is a compliment or praise to the directors/editors/actors of the film for capturing those moments on film and keeping them in the movie."
"Though most of my good rating comes from the movie behind the book, the author did a good job adding detail and more explanations. Like, the scene of Spock's birth was in the book and not the movie. Now, granted the author didn't add much background, which I would have liked. Aside from Jim and Spock, where did all those people come from? How did they get here? Okay, so Sulu's a great pilot and Chekov is a genius. I would have liked a little more, especially about Uhura and Nero. Each character was different and the writing from each point of view was nicely varied according to the current viewer."
"I had already read the book but HAD to listen to Zachary's reading. Superb job! He acts the story. . . no reader-ish pauses, audible swallowing or lip-smacking or stumbles typical of some audio readers. Thought he did the women particularly well and only a few of the accents were a tad off. Hope he manages to squeeze a few more audio gigs into his sure-to-be busy career.
The book itself was great. I had already seen the movie 3 times but the novelization added quite a bit to my understanding and enjoyment of the film. Nice to read some of the deleted scenes and to get a bit more of the internal dialog/emotions"
"Okay, first off, let me say I think they really went too far. It's okay to retcon the Trek universe, I suppose, but did they have to blow up Vulcan? That seems like overkill to me. And "Amok Time"! "Amok Time" will never happen now, or at least not the way it did. That's a nasty knock.
That's the scriptwriter's affair, however. Foster, as usual, makes excellent use of what he has to work with and delivers a first-rate novelization, one that I enjoyed reading. As amok as the plot is, he makes it work in print. So I give it four stars for that."
