"E. L. Doctorow' can interpret the most sensitive parts within mind and heart of the ordinary person or the greatly advantaged.
Doctorow tells the true story of two brothers who struggle with the world outside of their New York City mansion and the one being slowly created inside, driven by physical handicaps and psychological pain."
"I have been a fan of E.L. Doctorow since I studied his book Ragtime, as a freshman in college, in my first Amreican lit class. The man is truly a genius. This book is fiction, based upon the lives of two real people, eccentric brothers who lived in a wealthy New York City 5th Avenue brownstone until the middle of the 20th century. It really cannot be called historical fiction, however, as Doctorow takes a huge literary license and has them living long into the 1970's. As he gives us his perspective of the lives of these recluse brothers, he intertwines many of the social and historical happenings of the day, literally (and figuratively) bringing the world and it's multitude of changes right to their doorstep and into their home. It is odd and quirky, enlightening and sad. It is a quick read, and even tho it lacks some of the flair I have read in other books by this writer, I must admit it kept me thinking of these two oddballs long after I finished reading, and makes me want to try and learn a little more about their strange and sheltered lives."
"Very loosely based on the true-life story of the infamous Collyer brothers, Homer & Langley follows the lives of two eccentric and misunderstood men. Homer is blind, and has been since he was a teen. Once his parents die, he has to rely on brother Langley to help him run their household. The parents were somewhat wealthy and in "high society", although the brothers don't work and the money slowly dwindles away. With the estate rotting and falling apart around them, the brothers get stranger and more reclusive as they turn their backs on society.
The true story of the Collyers is fascinating. I really thought I would love this book based on that alone. However, for such an interesting topic I actually found the book....dull. So boring I could barely finish it, in fact. Because the book is so short (only 200 pages), the reader never gets a feel for what make Homer and Langely tick. Instead, we are given very brief glimples into their lives. I felt like entire years and decades were just skimmed over. And then there's all the (unbelievable, IMO) appearances by stereotypes of each era. The jazz musician who lives with them, the Japanese couple eventually detained who works for them, the gangster, the hippies who invade their home. We're supposed to believe that two oddballs who barely saw the light of day still managed to "collect" all these important characters? It just made the story outlandish, and a bit too "Forrest Gumpish" for my taste.
I probably would've rated the book even lower if it wasn't for the writing, which is good. Hopefully his next book will be better."
"Of the many things that E.L. Doctorow has done well in this book the first is that he has chosen a fascinating subject to write about: the lives of 2 eccentric brothers. He has done a magnificent job of illustrating how "normal" the "abnormal" can be. The matter-of-fact tones of brother Langley when recounting the bizarre events & strange lifestyle that he & Homer experience underscores this. Langley's accommodateshis brother's peculiarities that surface on the elder's return from WWI after exposure to mustard gas. This seems a matter of both acceptance of someone one loves as well as Langley's limited experience of anything else with which to compare it. The author, being masterful, there are many great passages. This is one I particularly enjoyed: "What about sports? I said. Whatever the sport, said Langley, someone wins and someone loses> What about art? If it is art, it will offend before it is revered. There are calls for its destruction and then the bidding begins. What if something comes along that has no precedent, I said. Where will your newspaper be then? Like what? Like Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Like that Einstein fellow's Theory of Relativity. Well you could say these theories replace the old ones. Albert Einstein replaces Newton, and Darwin replaces Genesis. Not that anything has been made clearer. But I'll give you that both theories are unprecedented. What of it? What do we really know? If every question is answered so that we know everything there is to know about life and the universe, what then? What will be different? It will be like knowing how a combustion engine works. That's all. The darkness will be there still.""
