About this title: To numb the pain of failure, Ferguson found comfort in drugs and alcohol, addictions that eventually led to an aborted suicide attempt. (He forgot to do it when someone offered him a beer). But his story has a happy ending: in 1993, the washed up Ferguson washed up in the United States, which from the age of 7 he had always seen as a beacon of goodness and possibility. Finally sober, he landed a breakthrough role on the hit sitcom "The Drew Carey Show", which eventually led to his current night job as the host of "The Late Late Show" on CBS. By far Ferguson's greatest triumph was his decision ...

"I liked this...I heard the audio version, which Craig read himself, so the timing was good on the funny stuff, the accent was nice, and you could tell in some of the depressing parts that he wasn't making excuses or trying to sound self-serving or anything. Just telling you what happened (serious alcohol and drug issues) in order to explain what happens later. Also didn't get preachy about getting sober - basically just said he went to rehab and 2 months later he came out and this is what else happened. I liked that. He's got some interesting stories and if you find him funny anyway, its a good read. Goes very quickly. I liked his writing style enough to add his actual novel to my reading list. Nice work Ferguson."
"I just love biographies. Everybody has a story to tell and I always find them fascinating. Craig Ferguson does not disappoint with his life's story. He speaks VERY candidly about his alcoholism, making no excuses for his behavior. I really like that personal responsibility. I found equally fascinating his story of recovery and all his opinions, ideas, and philosophiies that go with that. I went and saw his show being taped in Hollywood while I was reading this so that just endeared him to me even more. He is a gem and truly is the only funny guy on late night tv. (We DVR his show every night because I am soooo not a night owl.)
Warning: I love Craig, but I don't adore his use of bad language. I read most of this book out loud to Paul while our little family drove to California and found myself saying out loud quite frequently, "flip" and "poop". Paul thought it was funny."
""It's a great day for America everybody!" in a thick Scottish borough is how TV's Craig Ferguson begins his monologue each weeknight. As host of The Late Late Show, Craig follows David Letterman, spinning his unique and very different style of late night comedy. Fans of the show are well aware that the Glasgow native is now a naturalized American, and a recovering alcoholic, but few have known the whole story.
American On Purpose is a fascinating memoir, a cautionary tale, and a damned funny adventure into the world that formed what is possibly one of the most clever wits on television today. Without reveling in the past Ferguson manages to highlight just enough of the debauchery to let us see how it took hold of him. He opens his failings and weaknesses to examination without ever glorifying mistakes; humanizing himself and calling it what it is.
With amazing humor and clarity, the story carries the reader along as each story unfolds. Ferguson is a master story teller, and has well succeeded taking those stories to the page. At times, I could almost hear his borough as the vivid pictures came to life and the killer ducks chased through the park.
While it's true that I'm a sucker for anyone who finds the strength to admit they need help, and the courage to walk out their recovery; I also have little stomach for those who use it like a badge of achievement in Hollywood. Craig never does, but rather has the honesty and humility to do it day by day and let himself become a reminder that it can be done. American On Purpose makes that crystal clear, while still entertaining the reader.
I highly recommend this book to any and all, especially if you are or care about someone struggling with addiction. Even if not, it's a great read. My copy was signed in person and will be one of my treasured possessions."
"When I saw Ferguson in The Big Tease and Saving Grace I was a big fan. I had no idea of his history, how horrifying and fascinating and wonderful and sad it was. I enjoyed this book, by someone who has really gotten to his own personal "low point," and with the help of a lot of strong and loving people, come out on top. His musings on Scots, Scots and dancing, Scots and working, Scots and drinking made me laugh. His relationship with America made me think about my own feelings about being an America. His descriptions of his schooling experiences shook me. I thought I didn't like school, but his school was a snake pit. It makes my school look like it was run by kindly fairies and Good Witches. Enjoyed this one. Now, I wish his sister Lynn would write a book!
One question: who names their kid MILO, and why? Did he read The Phantom Tollbooth one too many times and think, "Yes, Milo Ferguson is the perfect name for my child.""
