"I love Pat Conroy's books. I've loved them ever since a girl I hardly knew gave me Beach Music on our trip to Europe in 2000. I'm pretty sure I own all of his books (except this one, which was from the library) and have read all of them. I didn't dislike the book, but it was so different from some of his previous books that I was a little bit disappointed in it.
Conroy has some tried-and-true themes that he sticks with: people who have had difficult lives struggling to live normal lives, the differences between wealthy people and people who have grown up without the opportunities that wealth affords - and just about everything in his books is set in the South, and one character often attends the Citadel. This book is true to those themes, but I thought it was much darker than Conroy's previous work, and it also has a number of deaths that occur for various reasons, at least one of which is pretty gruesome. I don't like gore and purposefully avoid books that I think will be bloody, so it's frustrating to read one of my favorite authors and find that kind of stuff. Also, and this is one of my pet peeves, he jumps around in time and I don't understand why he or his editor thought that was necessary. That worked in The Time Traveler's Wife, but that's no excuse for everyone else.
One Amazon reviewer summed up my opinion pretty well: "...The non-stop drama of these people's lives is exhausting. Family drama, relationship drama, racial drama, religious drama, deaths, suicides, crimes, affairs, addiction, mental illness, natural disasters, and not one psychopath--but two! Folks, it's a lot to take in. Mr. Conroy's stored up a lot of plot lines in the time he's been away from fiction, and apparently he decided to use them all.""
"Some things Pat Conroy does extremely well, and among those I count his descriptions--indeed, his love affair--with the city of Charleston. His evocation of a time and place are extraordinary. That said, this one left me puzzles. There were many loose ends that were never tied up, and "obligatory scenes" that were missing. When the parent of one of your main character dies--and especially when the parent is a key part of your plot--it would seem reasonable to have a scene where he finds out his parent is dead.
And by the same token, the antagonist is portrayed as a genius at getting out of sticky situations, yet he finds himself stuck in very small quarters, unable to get out. (If this sounds vague, it's only because I don't want to give anything away.)
Characters come and characters go, too much at the whim of "what works best for my plot now," stuffed in a figurative storage shed until needed again, and then dusted off and brought forward.
Charleston is much more than a setting here; it's a main character. It's worth it to read for his loving descriptions, but don't get hung up on the plot."
"When Pat Conroy writes about his home town of Charleston, South Carolina, he describes it so masterfully and with such deep and abiding love that you can almost smell it and taste it! His true genius is always evident in his strong narrative and his involved devotion to his characters. His ability to present mankind as naked and vulnerable while extolling its virtues, needs, and weaknesses goes far beyond magnificent.
In Mr. Conroy's latest book, South of Broad, young Leopold Bloom King is the protagonist and the narrator. He is the son of a gentle, loving father who teaches science and a mother who is an ex-nun and principal of the high school. Leo's older brother commits suicide at thirteen, and the family must bear the devastating effects of the tragedy. As a senior in high school, Leo becomes part of a tight knit group of friends who support and depend on each other with real love and caring. His friends include a set of glamorous twins whose parents are greatly flawed, a brother and sister who are orphaned runaways, and a beautiful socialite and her rich boyfriend. The relationships and lives of this group flourish during the 60's counterculture decade and into the 80s and the AIDS crisis of the time. This is a larger than life look at a group of friends who weather and find strength in each other through every crisis or tragedy with unconditional love.
As might be evident, I am a huge fan and devotee of Pat Conroy's writing. His deeply emotional works consistently present the joy and agony of his characters through phenomenally beautiful literature. More kudos to this brilliant author for his latest creation!"
"..something was missing for me with South Of Broad. I think that Pat Conroy fans will mostly be pleased as I was...but I did have a few problems: The teenage kids in the book don't talk the way teens do (or did in 1969). So some of the dialogue had problems. The overall structure of the book is fine and even though it is over 500 pages, I read it in 3 days. It's very simple and straightforward. The reader doesn't have to think too much and just gets to go along for the ride. If you are new to Conroy, you should start with Prince of Tides or Lords of Discipline. If you love Pat Conroy, you will want to read this novel that we waited patiently for 14 years for. No need for me to outline the plot here...other's do that well. I think if you are a high school football fan, are interested in what it might have been like to go to a de-segregated high school and play on a team with blacks and whites...then it's a great book. The book takes place in two time periods 20 years apart, and I enjoyed it more when they were young. My favorite kinds of boys in high school would have been Leo The Toad King, so I was happy to go on his journey.
I did happen to score a nice signed copy of this book, so I'll keep it as an investment."
