"When Pat Conroy writes about his home town of Charleston, South Carolina, he describes it so masterfully and with such deep and abiding love that you can almost smell it and taste it! His true genius is always evident in his strong narrative and his involved devotion to his characters. His ability to present mankind as naked and vulnerable while extolling its virtues, needs, and weaknesses goes far beyond magnificent.
In Mr. Conroy's latest book, South of Broad, young Leopold Bloom King is the protagonist and the narrator. He is the son of a gentle, loving father who teaches science and a mother who is an ex-nun and principal of the high school. Leo's older brother commits suicide at thirteen, and the family must bear the devastating effects of the tragedy. As a senior in high school, Leo becomes part of a tight knit group of friends who support and depend on each other with real love and caring. His friends include a set of glamorous twins whose parents are greatly flawed, a brother and sister who are orphaned runaways, and a beautiful socialite and her rich boyfriend. The relationships and lives of this group flourish during the 60's counterculture decade and into the 80s and the AIDS crisis of the time. This is a larger than life look at a group of friends who weather and find strength in each other through every crisis or tragedy with unconditional love.
As might be evident, I am a huge fan and devotee of Pat Conroy's writing. His deeply emotional works consistently present the joy and agony of his characters through phenomenally beautiful literature. More kudos to this brilliant author for his latest creation!"
"..something was missing for me with South Of Broad. I think that Pat Conroy fans will mostly be pleased as I was...but I did have a few problems: The teenage kids in the book don't talk the way teens do (or did in 1969). So some of the dialogue had problems. The overall structure of the book is fine and even though it is over 500 pages, I read it in 3 days. It's very simple and straightforward. The reader doesn't have to think too much and just gets to go along for the ride. If you are new to Conroy, you should start with Prince of Tides or Lords of Discipline. If you love Pat Conroy, you will want to read this novel that we waited patiently for 14 years for. No need for me to outline the plot here...other's do that well. I think if you are a high school football fan, are interested in what it might have been like to go to a de-segregated high school and play on a team with blacks and whites...then it's a great book. The book takes place in two time periods 20 years apart, and I enjoyed it more when they were young. My favorite kinds of boys in high school would have been Leo The Toad King, so I was happy to go on his journey.
I did happen to score a nice signed copy of this book, so I'll keep it as an investment."
"Greatly anticipated and greatly loathed. I love the other Conroy novels. The Great Santini and the Prince of Tides are modern classics. But now Conroy has taken the "dysfunctional South Carolina family" formula and beaten it into the ground.
Where to start? Implausible plot elements. I mean PUH-leeze. I can't even cover all the gimmicks Conroy throws into this plot where one or two of them (at the most!) would do the trick. Give your readers some credit, you don't have to hit them over the head with every imaginable twist on family dysfunction all in one book.
Embarrassingly unbelievable dialogue. Conroy is obviously trying to reproduce the kind of witty repartee you see on Friends but it just doesn't work here. These are teenagers speaking the words of sophisticated script writers. It not only doesn't ring true, but totally detracts from the story.
Worst of all is the preachy tone of the whole novel. Okay, we get it, this is about Racial Harmony and Gay Tolerance and Survivors of Childhood Trauma. The main character is so smugly "enlightened", even as a teenager, that you want nothing more than to smack him upside his self righteous head. Leo boldly leads his group of friends into Racial Harmony and Gay Tolerance while healing the wounds of Childhood Trauma and at same time showing remarkable and totally unbelievable attachment to a cantankerous, elderly character (what he does for this character, at one point, is simply not to be believed of any teenager.) He describes himself as a dork who bakes and sews prom gowns, but at the same time manages to make time with the female characters in a way that - again - defies belief.
All this is to say that I have yet to conclude this novel. With a few remaining chapters I intend to see it through to the bitter end. I have a feeling that it won't end the way I'd like which would be to see the entire cast of characters sail away on a Slow Boat to China, never to be heard from again!"
"A pretty good read, but not the best novel or even best Conroy novel I've ever read. It was full of interesting characters with very disparate personalities and unlikely friendships, who show that we are determined by our pedigree and environment only as much as we--blindly or deliberately--allow ourselves to be. Maybe the old argument about nature vs. nurture is a trick question; maybe the answer is neither--the actual answer is "choice." It could be said that only a Charlestonian will truly "get" somethings in this book, however, as someone who is near Charleston and knows it well by looking from the outside in, I can say there are other things in this book a Charlestonian truly will never get, the falsehood and blindness of Old Charleston's arrogantly misplaced pride, which makes Charleston's "culture" a most deceitful and toxic stew. Those North of Broad or outside the city limits do not sing Charleston any love songs--just parodies that a true Charlestonian is too blinded by arrogance to get. Although I liked some of the witty dialogue--it was, after all, poor Toad's most effective coping mechanism in his horrible childhood, that enabled him to deal with literature's most idiotic fool of a mother--some parts of the book come off as forced, unnatural, and untrue. Since it was such a long book, cutting out the dialogues that just didn't flow or ring true to the characters would have made both a shorter and a better book. I can pay this book a really huge compliment--whenever I converse with anyone who's read it, our discussions can go on forever. There must be something very special about a book that can stimulate that much thought. Gee, I wonder if Conroy himself agrees about how much the thread of "arrogant blindness" weaves through this tale."
