"THE SIEGE OF MACINDAW, the sixth installment in John Flanagan's best-selling RANGER'S APPRENTICE series, picks up right where THE SORCERER OF THE NORTH left off, with Alyss imprisoned in Macindaw castle at the mercy of Keren the usurper.
Will is soon united with enemy-turned-best-friend Horace, deep in Malcolm the Healer's mysterious forest. Much as it pains the two to be so close to Macindaw and yet so helpless, the two know that they do not stand a chance against Keren and his soldiers. Worst of all, Will has no idea what the traitor Keren might be up to.
The unexpected arrival of a small Skandian force, led by Gundar Hardstriker, is the ultimate blessing. While the Skandians find themselves stranded in Araluen quite by accident, Will greets them heartily and quickly turns them into his own small army, led by none other than Horace, the Oakleaf Knight.
With intelligence covertly provided by Alyss, Will and Horace learn of Keren's plans to turn Macindaw over to the Scotti tribes of Picta. All the odds are against them, but Will and Horace are not about to give up. The ranger and warrior complement each other perfectly, and the two hope that Will's agility and wit paired with Horace's strength and fighting experience will be enough to overcome Keren's forces and the fast-approaching Scotti army. Trying to take Macindaw with only thirty men is a daunting task, a feat never before achieved in Araluen history.
In other words, the perfect challenge.
In the end, they succeed and claimed Castle Macindaw as their own. Soon afterward, Will returns to his fief, leaving his companions again. Weeks after this was over, he gets a letter from Alyss, who finally reveals her feelings for him. Elated, Will gets on Tug and rode straight for Castle Redmont."
"The Ranger's Apprentice series could have had every place in the world to show wear and tear, but it just keeps going. The latest novel is no different, offering up once more inventive, smart, and great writing, a clever story, brilliant action, and remarkably real characters. John Flanagan fails to disappoint, and, as always, leaves me waiting for the next book. Though the ending of this one seems somewhat different, in a word, and leaves absolutely no hints as to where the next is going to go with the plot, it's okay because everything that has come before that point is a fast-paced, wonderful adventure--just as it should be.
"Super story. Really liked it. Had some great little tidbits about creating good outcomes by thinking positively.
The only thing wrong was the little bit of romance thrown in. (NOT icky or anything wrong with it at ALL--except that 10 yro boys don't care about that at all yet. He was annoyed with that part of it.)
Very fun though, inventive solutions to problems. Still a fabulous series for boys."
"This is the final volume the library purchased of this series. It's entirely consistent with the others and my opinion of this story stands as a whole: it's a fine, simple adventure-and-battle fantasy that focuses on some fairly immature characters with a linear, no-surprises plot. I am just as happy that the author gave up the evil magical overlord and his demonic minions in the first episode and just focused on human characters, since there is plenty of adventure there for his stripped-down style.
While there's nothing here that a young girl couldn't and perhaps wouldn't read, I think this is real daydream-material for a young boy. It really does nothing to present female figures (all both of them in the six volumes!) in any rounded sense--they remain figures of mildly romantic yearning.
These were a pleasant enough read but definitely too simplified to attract cross-reading adults: these are middle school books."
