"The setting was vivid and alluring, the premise had some promise, but six flat characters do not add up to a wholly satisfying book. Although Mr. Swarup is a diplomat who has travelled widely, his use of "American" dialect was so grotesquely laden with corny idioms and out-of-date slang as to be nearly unreadable, while the American characters were the worst sort of cariacatures of G.W. Bush-style Dumb Americans and promiscuous women. Likewise, "the tribal's" narrative falls into a variety of offensive tropes about "primitive" indigineous peoples."
"This book was wonderfully written. I really enjoyed the varied characters and the amazing interlacing of their individual lives ~ as well as all the plot twists. For a 450+ page book, I was shocked I finished it in 3 days. I just wanted to know "whodunnit"!!!
A few of the characters were a bit ~ strong (stereotypical), shall I say, but I was OK with it because those characters were easy to follow in a book full of need-to-remember names. (I hate it when the characters blend into one another and you have to backtrack to figure them out again when they reappear in the story.)
I am very likely going to track down "Q&A" next as I haven't seen 'Slumdog' and this is my first introduction to V. Swarup."
"Excellent story about a murder in India and the lives of the six suspects. Each suspects' story is very interesting and could really be a book in and of itself. Great twist ending. A fast read by the author of "Q & A" which became "Slumdog Millionaire". Can't wait for Six Suspects to be made into a movie!"
"This novel is a whodunnit murder mystery by the author who wrote Q & A (...that led to Slumdog Millionaire). The book had a common theme about India and its corruption. I raced through the book because the novel is set up with suspense and intrigue. However, there is something I just didn't like about the book, and I can't quite place it. I think it's the writing which is off-putting, but also the ridiculous-ness as the story progressed. The author was trying to be original with the storyline and its characters, but there was something generic about it. While "White Tiger" illustrated India's corruption in a smart, ingenious way that made you think beyond the book's writing, this book seemed more of a farce than a real in-depth look at India's class disparities. However, if the author's goal was to provide entertainment for the reader, then he succeeded."
