In 2008 an extraordinary two-minute film clip appeared on YouTube and immediately became an international phenomenon. It captures the moving reunion of two young men and their pet lion Christian, after they had left him in Africa with "Born Free's "George Adamson to introduce him into his rightful home in the wild. "A Lion Called Christian "tells the remarkable story of how Anthony "Ace" Bourke and John Rendall, visitors to London from Australia in 1969, bought the boisterous lion cub in the pet department of Harrods. For several months, the three of them shared a flat above a ...

"So I read this one under duress (A co-worker bought it for me and then kept asking me if I'd read it yet). So not something I would generally pick up. But it was a really nice true story of the heartwarming variety about two guys (lovers?) who buy a lion cub and raise it. They must have gotten some nasty letters over the years because the tone was a bit too apologetic at times - there was a lot of "in retrospect we know that was wrong." I'd pick this one up if your looking for a chicken soup for the soul kind of read that's less preachy and annoying. Or if you like lions."
"A quick read. Certainly fascinating for anyone who ever thought about raising a wild animal. The authors obviously loved Christian very much, but wanted the best for him. Even after purchasing him they found fault with the fact that he was sold at basically an upscale department store. The only thing that would make the book better is if we knew what happened to Christian, but in the end its important to remember that he was always a wild animal, even when living with the authors."
"I read "Born Free" when I was in grade school and it made a big impact on me. Imagine my surprise to discover that around the same time these 2 friends were involved with a lion in England. The '60's setting in London increased my interest as did the reunion story. This book has been republished after the video of the reunion between Christian and his past owners was posted on YouTube. I then watched a special on Animal Planet about this story. To read more about George and Elsa Adamson, who were quite complex characters in their own right, gave me more insight into their personalities. Over all, several elements intertwined to make this book appealing to me."
"Some of you may be familiar with this story since it was all the rage on YouTube a few months ago.
The story started when Ace Bourke and John Rendell came to London from their native Australia in 1969. While there, they were Harrods Department Store doing some shopping when they saw that a pair of lions were on sale. They decided to buy one before bringing him home to an apartment they had above a furniture store in which they were staying. They called the lion Christian, and thus started their time together.
It quickly became clear as Christian grew that he would prove to be too big to own in their home. They loved him, and he had become a major part of their family. Once they knew he was going to need a new home, they decided to shop around for possibilities. It quickly became clear that living in a zoo was not a humane option. It was by chance that they got an opportunity for Christian to reintroduced to the wild. They ended up being visited by Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, a pair of actors who had taken on the role of animal rights defenders after starring in the movie Born Free. They connected Ace and John with a trainer who took domestic lions to the African wilderness so they could slowly be returned safely.
This book tells the story of Christian's time with John and Ace as well as two later visits they made to meet Christian and his family in the wilderness a year and two years after his return to the wilderness. It is a touching and interesting story that is likely to pluck the heartstrings of any animal lover.
The book is presented with simple writing and really does a great job of telling the story. It was actually first published in the early 1970's, but the interest that was produced from the video being on YouTube encouraged them to reissue the book with more up-to-date information. It is a quick, easy, and rewarding read."
