"Linda Castillo's Sworn to Silence is the first book in an upcoming series featuring the young and vivacious Kate Burkholder, the current chief of police of Painters Mill, OH, and former member of the town's Amish community.
Set in a quiet town with a large Amish population, the author creates a unique and interesting setting for the serial killer who terrorizes the town (and whose MO is alarmingly reminiscent of the murderer who struck 15 years ago) and the police department that is responsible for catching the psychopath who preys on young women. Burkholder's tumultuous past (with a dark secret thrown in for good measure) makes for great conflict within the character herself. It also creates friction between Burkholder and those around her, especially the outside officers and investigators who were brought in to help her solve the crime. The cast of characters is diverse and interesting, providing for an entertaining and engaging read.
All in all, this thriller was suspenseful and had me turning the pages until the killer was revealed and everything was resolved. I'm interested to see what Castillo has in store for Kate Burkholder so I will most likely read the subsequent books in this series."
"Sworn to Silence is a chilling new series debut by Linda Castillo. The audio book is read by Kathleen McInerney. She does a fabulous job with different voices in this thriller. The reader should be warned up front the the book can been pretty gory and there is a lot of violence toward women described.
Kate Burkholder grew up in the quaint town of Painters Mill, Ohio where many Amish residents still drive buggies, shun electricity, and distance themselves from the complications of modern life. A serial killer, dubbed The Slaughterhouse Killer, shatters the peace of this little town and leaves the residents terrified and on guard. During this time, young Kate's life takes a fateful turn when she was just 14. She was sexually assaulted by an Amish man named Daniel Lapp. She shoots the man and seeing him lifeless on the floor, she is certain he is dead. Her father drags away the body, and the family never speaks of the incident again, and it is never reported to the police. She and her family are "Sworn to Silence". The area murders cease around the time that Lapp is killed, and the residents begin to live somewhat normal lives once again.
Some 16 years later, Kate now 30, is the police chief in Painters Mill. She must deal with a series of brutal crimes in which the female victims are tortured and raped, and Roman numerals carved onto their stomach. These crimes are very similar to those that occurred when she was a young girl. Is this a copy-cat? Kate begins to asks herself if Daniel Lapp is really dead. She is determined to track down this killer before he strike again.
My Thoughts: This is one thriller that I thought I had figured out early on, but I was wrong. It wasn't until the last third of the book that my second guess was correct. (I like when this happens in a thriller). I thought this book was very good. There was a part where some romance was woven into the story, and my personal feeling was that this aspect, took away from the story instead of enhancing it. Despite this I would still recommend this novel I you enjoy a good thriller."
"When horror comes to the small Ohio town of Painters Mill, police chief Kate Burkhold is thunderstruck. The MO of the latest killing is exactly the same as murders committed 16 years ago. The mindboggling detail is Kate thought she had shot the killer in self defense. Could he still be alive or is there a copy cat killer out there?
Kate, a young former Amish woman, along with her two siblings has kept this secret for years. The Amish prefer to keep these things to themselves and handle it their own way. When Kate left the community she took her nightmares and secrets with her. Now that she has to investigate the latest crime, she hesitates to call in outside help because they might uncover more than just the perpetrator's identity.
The City council and the mayor go behind her back and call in several other agencies to help with the investigation. The county sherriff, Nate Detrich, along with an agent from BCI are called in. Who does the BCI send but John Tomasetti; an agent the bureau could do without. He's a former rogue cop who needs pain killers to get him through the day and booze to get him through the night. His involvement in this case may just be a saving grace for him. In the end he might just surprise the agency and Kate along with himself. Even with all his vices, I found him to be a likeable character.
This is a well paced, excellently written thriller. It kept me on the edge of my seat with the gripping suspense and chilling detail. The dialogue is very believable. One caveatif you are squeamish: there are some gruesome details of the murder victims. Do not let that deter you from reading this book as it will be easy to just skip over those parts. highly recommended for fans of mystery, thrillers or police proceduals. 4*"
"Wow. I just finished this today and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Let's see... Kate is the chief of police for a small town in Ohio. She grew up Amish but at the age of 14 was raped and killed her attacker, and her family hid the crime. Now the man she believed she killed may be back and torturing and murdering other young women, and Kate is tasked with stopping him.
There's a lot more going on here, including local political maneuvering, a rogue cop whose bosses want to fire him, relations between the Amish and "English," all sorts of good stuff. The author does a nice job of pacing the action and delivering the facts to the reader.
The book is a bit graphic, but I don't know if that's just my perception because I've just come off reading several happy young adult books. And, I did not realize who the bad guy was. I could have, probably, but the author did a good job of presenting information so that no single person stood out and you weren't always sure what motives were behind the actions of the characters. Very good read. I will definitely be looking for more of her books."
