About this title: "This new two-volume edition should do something for increasing Gogol's fame as the most original, imaginative, and exuberant of all Russian writers, as the greatest comedian and humorist among a rather solemn lot."--Rene Wellek, Yale University

"This was my introduction to Gogol, and I am definitely interested in more. This collection of tales is exclusively made up of either stores that contain ghosts, devils, witches or the like, or stories that simply traffic in the absurd of human nature and behavior.
Gogol pulls each of these off beautifully, moving effortlessly between truly horrific passages on the one hand, and then over to deftly comic scenes on the other. This back and forth all takes place within events that we might call remarkable or out of the ordinary.
Gogol's approach, at least in these stories, was clarified for me at the end of one of his Petersburg Tales, The Nose. There, the narrator of the story speaks of events that are outside our abilities to explain. These kinds of stories seem pointless on their face, but in reality they force us to consider that the world might be beyond our comprehension, that it stretches beyond even our wildest imagination, and that there are things in this world that will doggedly defy our explanations.
In Gogol's time, at the height of Enlightenment thinking, and particularly as a Russian watching these ideas from Europe come pouring into his country, these stories would have been quite radical for the educated elite so captivated by Europe."
"This Pevear and Volokhonsky translation is absolutely wonderful and confirms what I'd felt for a while - the "The Nose" and "The Overcoat" are two of the bet damn stories EVER written, and without the bonds of the antiquated Penguin translations, these works absolutely sing and run at 75 m.p.h. through sorrow and humor and the general beastial nature of man. Though "The Story of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich" is quite masterful, I wasn't terribly into the Ukrainian tales (thus the 4 stars), although the mystical nature of them were clearly the foundation for the genius he wields in the Petersburg Tales."

"(dont know which stories r included here) but n e way i like gogol a lot esp his ukrainian tales so "evenings on a farm near dikanka" r my fav except for "shponka" tale and "terrible vengeance", out of "mirgorod" tales i liked "viy" and "ivan i vs ivan n" and regarding "st pet tales" i liked "nose" and "overcoat", "diary of a madman" was also nice, oh and btw we have a nose monument here in st pet :)"
"This book is a great collection of Gogol's surrealist- flavored, dark- witted writing. "The Nose" is one of my favorite pieces of literature by virtue of its absurdity. Gogol makes pointed critiques of Russian society in the era in which he lived, in ways that are both sad and wildly hilarious to read about."
