About this title: Dating from about the third century A.D., the "Yoga Sutra" distills the essence of the physical and spiritual discipline of yoga into fewer than 200 brief aphorisms. This new translation by one of the leading Sanskrit scholars of our time makes the work accessible at last.

"This austere book, composed of terse, tightly constructed aphorisms, in which every word counts (chosen with utmost precision) about the purpose, foundation and principles of Yoga, makes one wonder *what* in the world people are practicing in yoga studios across America...a corrupted version of Buddhism mingled with self-confirming secular liberal individualism or something...? after all, Yoga is a practice of 'yoking' oneself to God, and is premised on the belief in an Absolute, a fact I imagine most practitioners in America care to explain away. A possible difficulty with this edition, depending on your standards: the translator sees fit to explain Patanjali's text in terms of Buddhism: of course, using Buddhism as a hermeneutic device may be a very neat way of explaining away the severity and absoluteness of Patanjali (since Buddhism radicalizes the "neti neti" of Hindusim). I would hazard a guess that the attractiveness of Buddhism for many people is that it appeals to the tolerant relativist within. Besides, the translator's use of Buddhism reflects the position of American yoga practice: in many studios you might see a little statue of Buddha somewhere. Call it instead of Yoga, Buddhoga or Yoddhism. Secondly, Buddhist hermeneutics reflects the blessed ignorance of most Westerners about eastern thought: "it's all the same, and it's all Buddha, which is gentle and good" But, alas, this is not simply true. Just read the books and you'll see, clear as day. And, if one says in response, "but it's not about books, you can't read it out of a book", I say: first, how do you know? second, they wrote the books. third, they cared enough about what words convey to use words with *very* precise meanings. Let me hazard another guess: the claim about Eastern Thought by Westerners, when held with a certain passion (that it's all about Buddha etc), presupposes a claim about Western Thought: "it's all the same, and it's bad, either hyper technizing inhuman rationalism or deadly superstitious Christian badness". The Yoga Sutras is dated from 2nd century BCE, prior to the arrival of Buddhism. Maybe the reader should do the work first of trying to grasp Patanjali? It is well worth the effort. I would recommend reading this along with the Bhagavadgita."
"A clear and concise translation with just enough commentary to flesh out the short but often obscure aphorisms. It's not a technical or academic treatment, but the commentary serves as a good jumping off point if you want to get into the deeper philosophical stuff. If you've already read the Sankhya karikas and are looking for a more rigorous connection with the Yoga Sutra you'll have to turn elsewhere. Miller's translation is an excellent way to get started though."
